I was think about have a sunroof installed. I miss having a sunroof. Had one in my Mustang and my Integra also had one. But they were factory installed. People tell me that after market sunroofs leak. Is that true?

Do I have to get a pop-up kind, or could I get an electric type?

How much would it cost?

I'd worry more about other things than leaking.

1. Structural Integrity - the roof is part of the entire structure of a unibody. It adds torsional rigidity to the vehichle. Any tampering could throw it off making the car unsafer, less capable. Also, nevermind the leaking. If it isn't sealed properly, water may not enter the cabin, but may inside the roof which will lead to rust and rotting problems.

2. Control - If it is pop-up then not much to worry. But if you get electrical, how much can they make it like factory. How can they integrate it with the electrical system and throw it on?

3. Resale - Nissans don't have a really good resale value. Could this help it or hurt it? Not sure. Depends on the job done and where you live.

Whatever you do, it's up to you. Make sure if you do, go to a reputable place such as ASC. It will be expensive, but the work done will be superb.

Just do your homework before cutting into the roof panel.

 

the 1st owner of my car had one installed in 1997.....its sti in there and works fine, just a little noisy. no leaking!

 

In my opinion I would NEVER put in a aftermarket sunroof! I would also never buy a car with one it, they dont look nearly as nice as factory installed units. Also if it ever breaks I dont think you can buy new parts without replacing the whole thing. Yes in most cases it will decrease the value of the car.

 

I had bad luck w/ an aftermarket sunroof when I had a '97 Altima, the thing kept rattling like crazy no matter how many times I had it fixed

Good thing the sunroofs on my Max and my Jeep are factory installed

I would never get another aftermarket sunroof, but to each his/her own

 

Sunroofs leak. Don't do it. Waste of a lot of money.

 

good point, ive installed many sunroofs, you do a lot of cutting, and iive had almost every single one come back at some point or another for sealent problems... they happen no way around them..

Plus, I think I need to use that money for a new Knock sensor.

I was on the highway giving it a little gas, it felt sluggish then service engine soon light started to flash for a while then stopped. When I got home I plugged my code reader in and pulled code 325 which translate to 0304. After 162,000 miles, I knew it was coming.

 

I have seen some that get put in that are pretty good quality. Actually, the guy that I used to send my customers to when I worked at the dealership guaranteed his work, and had fewer instances of leakage than the actual OEM sunroofs. He would install them and maintain them and guarantee them for the life of the car in that one owner's possession. Anyway, They were actually better than the OEM ones. They were one-touch back, forward and tilt.

However, if it was my car, I would probably just save the money and use it for something else.

BTW, a good job will probably run you anywhere from about $800-$1000

 

my mom got one installed on her camry and has never had leaking issues let alone any issues with it. (knock on wood) i've heard of many people with leaking issues, but never actually met these people in person or seen one leak.
