squealing noise

i own a 96 se 5-speed. i was driving today and i suddenly heard a squealing/whistling noise coming from around my front right wheel. I only hear it when i am going forward. The engine does not have to be running. Reverse sounds normal. Does anyone know what this could be? Thanks.

Could be the warning clip that they put on brake pads to indicate when you need new ones. I would take them off and check. It is pretty easy...just look in the How-to's.

I tested it again today and realized it was more of a high pitched groaning. My dad thinks the caliper may have siezed. I don't want to drive it because i am afraid of wrecking something. I will try to remove that warning clip.

when my car has sat for a bit (2+hours) and it first starts moving (forward or backward) I get a low groan for a second or too, not too worried about it though.

Actually, that is a common thing that our maxima's do. It kind of sounds like a fog horn? Mine does that too, when I am backing up and lightly press on the brake. It only does it for a sec, and then goes away. It is nothing that I can figure out, and rather than spending money on getting it to go away, I just deal with it. From all I have read here on the .org, it is pretty harmless.

As for the caliper seizing, I don't know. It might have. If it has, you are right...you don't want to be driving. Check it out.

Also, a word of warning....Do not take those warning clips off of the brake pads if you don't check them pretty often(like every oil change/rotate tires). I rotate my tires every time I change my oil(5k miles), so it is no problem for me to just get under there and look. That way, I don't have a lot of surprises. Got me?

i took it down today and the mechanic said thel ower control arm ball joint and bushing were bad. Nissan doesn't sell the bushing separate so he says i need to replace the entire control arm. He says that is causing the rotor to rub against the caliper

fire your mechanic for saying you can't get bushings seperately.
go to courtesynissan.com/energysuspension
you can get a control arm bushing kit for $30
