horrible sound

My max is making the worst screeching sound...it seems like its coming from the transmission/cluch area but the clutch only has 5k miles on it...and has been amazing up until now.

it drives perfectly fine no slipping or smell...the sound is worse at idle and when the clutch is to the floor.

kinda sounds like steel on aluminum but i cant figure out what it could possibly be except something on the clutch grinding on the flywheel..(hopefully NOT..i love my fidanza) I did the clutch job myself and I checked and double checked every nut and bolt to the point of overkill.

CEL came on when i started her up tonight to move it into the garage..
an 0509 which came up undefined in the FAQs

i know ive seen someone else ask for that code before but i dont remember what the solution was..

any help or advice would be appreciated.

0509 is the front O2 sensor

Can you isolate the sound at all? Does it do it when you're moving? Still? Clutch engaged? Disengaged? Does it get louder as engine RPM increases? Does it go away when engine RPM increases?

it does do it when im moving and when im idling

More so when the clutch is fully engaged then when its not

it is still there as RPMS increase...but it is sorta drowned out by my intake/ypipe

you replaced the throwout bearing and the pilot bearing when you did the clutch right?

By fully engaged, you mean clutch pedal up, right?

see when its fully to the floor it usually means its pilot bearing (possibly defective?) but then it also makes the sound at idle...so that kinda shoots that idea cause at idle it would be the release bearing

they couldnt both be bad...unless there is something more going on..misalignment of some sort

but i made sure everything was perfect before i put it back together..so im at a loss here

Ok...if the noise gets real bad when you disengage the clutch, I'd rule out the input shaft bearing. I'd lean towards TO bearing. Did you grease it well?

I have a similar type of noise it comes in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gears when I'm driving. Meaning when the car is in gear and the clutch is fully released and car is moving. It increases with RPMS. However, when stopped theres no noise at any rpms.

Can anyone tell me whats wrong with my transmission. And is it ok if I keep driving it like this untill I save up enough to get this fixed?

Sorry for going a lil off topic here mymaxlvsattn.

mymaxlvsattn: Did you grease the contact point on the TO bearing? (where it touches the fingers on the pressure plate)

nizmo: If you have some time, try these to help troubleshoot your problem:

1) Car still, engine running, clutch pedal down, neutral
2) Car still, engine running, clutch pedal up, neutral
3) Car rolling, engine running, clutch pedal down, neutral
4) Car rolling, engine running, clutch pedal up, try all gears

These test will help isolate the moving parts when this sound occurs. If the sound occurs during any of these tests, try to determine if the sound changes w/engine speed in the test where clutch pedal is down, or vehicle speed in the test where clutch pedal is up.

i cant recall off of the top of my head...
would that cause the TO bearing to wear prematurely?

Leaving the clutch pedal down for extended periods of time; reving heavily w/the clutch pedal down.

You're supposed to have the clutch pedal down as little as possible; sitting at a red light with your foot on the clutch is not the best idea.

Well as soon as my max started sounding ill I garaged her and been driving my truck. Hopefully sunday I will be able to drop the transmission and see what exactly is the issue. Ill post some sounds/pictures and whatnot and hopefully help some other people if possible. THANKS A LOT sryth for helping me out.

Sryth:

The only time I can hear the noise is:
4) Car rolling, engine running, clutch pedal up, 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears.
Might also be present in 4th and 5th but too low so cant be heard over the engine noise.

Sound changes with engine/vehicle speed (RPMS) when clutch pedal is up.

Also, I just noticed. There is alot of chatter noise with the car still, engine running, and clutch pedal up but it does not increase with engine speed and goes away when clutch pedal is pushed in.

The noise heard in 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears is similar to the clutch chatter but louder and increases with engine speed when clutch pedal is up.

Sounds like the start of a bearing failure. It's probably not the differential bearings (though they may be on their way out too), because it makes the noise when the car isn't moving.

I'd take it to a good transmission mechanic and have them listen to it. Let us know what they say and we'll tell you if they sound like they're full of ****

Any update?

Is the noise kinda like marbles in a can?

I think I've got the exact same thing.
