Engine Squeals when starting

hey guys, i looked around and didn't see anything about this, and i could post in the general form, but i do have a 4th gen.

Whenever i start up my car, usually after it has sat for more than an hour or two, there is a high pitched Squealing noice. It usually lasts 10-15 seconds, or till i rev the engine in neutral to about 4k a couple of times. There is no other problems with how it runs, and someone mentioned it might be the belts. I just want to know if anyone has experienced this, and if so, how did they get it fixed. (is there anyway for me to do it myself, or should i just take it in to a shop)

check the tension in your belts, also look for warn/damaged belts. might try some of that belt-stop-squeek stuff, though I personally don't have any experiance with it.

I've been having the same problem, but mine happens when I first start the car in the morning. The sound only lasts until the engine warms up.
On my previous car, I had loud belts and used the belt spray/dressing. It did help the situation... temporarily. I had to use it quite often to shut up my car. I ended up bringing it into a shop to get my belt replaced. The mechanic told me that the spray does more harm than good in the long run. Like I said, it's only a temporary quick fix.
If you still can't handle the noise, you can always turn up your music! Good luck!

I wouldn't recommend using any belt lubricant on the belts.

I did that once in high school on my '87 olds toronado, i had a serpentine belt setup so it was one belt driving everything so one time it was squealing like crazy, I used belt lube on the belt and the next day after, my belt came off

thanks, it doesn't botter me when i start it up, cause i have the windows up, it's the other people around. i didn't care at first, cause i didn't realize how loud it was, but now i'm starting to get embarrased. i'll see what i can do about tugging on the belts, and if not i'll take it in.
