Thumping Noise from Suspension

It's annoying - I get this noise every time I go over bumps and holes. I have a '96SE. Started a few months ago when I hear a slight creak when going over speed bumps. That was when it was cold. It's warmer now and I get the thumps. Anyone have this problem? Do I need to shange out my struts, springs, strut bearings, or all? What kind should I get? Please help. Thanks!

Sounds like your struts are bad, when was the last time, if ever that you/previous owner had them changed out? I haven't had any experience with these, but a lot of orgers are going for kyb-gr2 struts. Relatively inexpensive, and supposedly pretty good. Try doin some research on those. Your springs shouldn't be the problem

Thats what my 96 GLE struts sounded like when i'd go over bumps and I'm pretty sure they were still good. Prettymuch went away when i got the Illuminas though

I just change my rear struts with GR-2 and i still have the sound. I know that it's coming from the rear and i really suspect the lateral link that attach with the beam.

i think it may be the strut bearings...i know mine are bad...but that only pertains to the creaking up front....the thumping out back just started happening in my car recently after locking up my brakes for about 100ft...through wheels way out of balance and i think flat spotted my tires as well...

had them rotated and balanced, but the rear still thumps a little at certain speeds...namely 20-30....guy at shop said they were way out of balance....balancing fixed 75% of the thumping...the rest is a flat spot....and contrary to belief, a burn-out didn't help...which makes me worry that isn't a flat spot in the tires but something in my rear suspension....only happens between 20 and 30 or so....we'll see when I get new tires....

I haven't changed out the struts before; I don't think the previous owners did either. The strut dust boot came apart. That would be an indication that the strut is dried out. Would it be a good idea to change out the strut bearing with the strut too? How much are strut bearings?

I don't know exactly how much those bearings are but you can check to see what the problem is by doing it yourself. It's not that hard all you have really to remove it five nuts and bolts (3 on top &2 on that support the shock). For all you know it could just be a broken gasket.
