Starting problems particular to 95 model?

Let me start by saying I love the search function. I'd use that more for stuff like this if I could. Even though I'm a donating member, I can rarely get it to work. I have trouble loading all org pages really. I don't seem to have many problems with other web sites. Is it the org, or is my computer just discriminating?

Anyway, my friend just bought a 95 SE. He's having intermittent starting problems. When it does happen, the starter will usually start turning when you turn the key, and then it will just lock up even with the key still held to start. I don't know much about the starting system other than only knowing how to remove/reinstall the starter. I've told him his problem could be the starter itself, the ignition switch, or something else entirely.

My main question is aren't there problems with the starting system particular to the 95 model? I thought I remembered reading that here at some point. If so, is it just an original component that once replaced possibly solves the problem? Thanks.

It is very common for 1995-1996 to have starter problems. For one, the 8-tooth starter was supplanted by a better 10-tooth one mid1996. It is very common for the grease to dry up and give you problems. The problem I see with your description is that you should never turn the ignition key for more than a few seconds. Doing so will fry your starter. Also, being an older car, it is more important to ensure that routine maintenance is adhered to. My 1995 is meticulously cared for and it cranks right up the first try every time...even in the dead of winter.
