Any one else ever have this Odometer problem?

My Odometer has stopped working. In the last 3,000 miles or so my odometer has only logged about 14 of them. At first it started off not working every so often to not at all now. The speedometer and the Tach both work fine. Anyone know how to troubleshoot this? I know some of you wouldn't mind having this problem, but I do.

my friends max did that at 170,000 miles and this i guess is common in cars with high miles. My brothers 83 volvo did it and i have heard many people say the same thing at high miles. But if your car doesn't then i dunno

Probably a loose connection in the back of the cluster. Is your car a 5spd by any chance? My buddies stopped working too when his car one day decided not to shift into gears. Speed sensor or something.

Yep! Also have a 96 Max GXE 5sp. Odometer (correction) and Tripmeter has not worked for the last year or so. Miles are stuck at 93,xxx. Tripmeter at 0. Everything else works fine. Was given a rough quote of $800 (parts/labor) to replace the "unit" whatever that is. Naturally I've decided to live with the problem!

Alot of 95-96's have this problem. Open it up and check to see if anything is broken. On my friends max, I believe the dealer replaced a speed sensor somewhere.

$800 dollars? Oh hell no, I'd live with the problem to. Yes my car is a 5speed. I guess I'll open it up when I have time and take a look.

Yes my car does this, It will put 10-20 miles for every 60-100 miles driven . starts and stops when it feels like it.

I've seen that problem on older BMWs, Volvos, and VW's. That's why in this day and age a person should never buy a vehicle with a mechanical ODO. For Maxima I guess that means stick with a 98+.

Even if you get it fixed, the ODO is gonna start from 0 and no matter who sees the car in the future, they will think it's been tampered with. There used to be rebuilders of the ODO, but they charged around $200 to do it. Again, not worth it.

What I've seen is that sometimes when it's cold those mechanical instruments would work, and then when it got hot they became stuck. I'd say just drive it the way it is. Good luck.

It's not a big deal for me if it works or not, I'm not selling soon or anything like that. I just like to have it working to keep track of my oil changes and maintenance. Kind of hard to do if it's not working. Guess i'll just have to avg. the amount of miles I drive per month and figure it out like that

Yeah, if your driving is anything like mine, assuming 22.7 mpg is a perfect number to use, that is around town. Just record how many gallons of fuel you've used. Allow for a little more if on the highway.

Mine did that exact same thing at about 94K. It just stopped working for some reason. I'm guessing I drove it about 700-800 miles and it started working again.

Weird.............

I had the maintenance schedule delimma as well, but had an easy solution. Figured I average 15k per year. Given I use Mobil and do not drive under "extreme conditions", a 7.5k oil change interval is reasonable so I just change the oil twice a year..in April and October.

I drive about 20K a year so I think 3 times a year will work for me (every 4 months)
