Water Pump

Water Pump
I have a 96 that has 155,000 on her. She still runs
great, but I am getting close to the point where I
am afraid to invest any more money in. The water pump
leaks when the car is cooling down. My regular mechanic
seemed afraid to do the job because it requires the timing
cover to be removed. His concern was that once he took
this off there may be other problems that could run into $$$$.
I'm pretty sure there isn't a timing belt, so what is his fear?
In any case he said the water pump alone would be $650,
and in case of anything else the price would obviously go
up. Are his concerns valid? Should I see if someone else
will do this job cheaper?
Many Thanks

I have a bad water pump as well. I got a price of $450 parts and labor, but I have read of other getting it done for cheaper.
I would be worried about using a mechanic that is scared to touch a timing chain. Only thing that has to be done with the chain is that the tensioner has to be released to remove the chain from the teeth of the water pump. Special attention has to be paid to make sure the chain does not move while it is released. Besides that it is straight forward.
