Just lost to a Jetta VR6

NA Jetta VR6 5spd vs. Me - 98 NA auto....

We did 1 run from 20mph. I was in 2nd...dunno if he was in 2nd or 1st...I honked 3x -- we both were WOT...we were even till he was about ½ way done w/ 2nd gear I guess...then he started pulling. By 3rd gear (me) he had 1 car length on me but I was slowly creeping....then he slowed down.

Hmmm if the max has one strongpoint it's going from a roll. But the VR6 pulls pretty good to about the same speeds as max give or take. Friend had a real nice GTi VR6 until it met the wall of the last turn @ Road Atlanta.

Anything can happen on the street. Taking my **** to commerce or MMP next weekend now that I finally put the y-pipe on. That way you have a piece of paper and usually video of what went wrong or what he did right.

Hmmmm... I barely lost to a Wolfsburg a couple months ago. Maybe half a car up to 190 km/h, from a dead stop. I know they're running boost, but I've no idea how much, or even what engine's in there. I know VR's are pretty good, but you shouldn't have lost by that much.

Thats about right b/c I know a girl with a 99 VR6 Jetta 5 speed, intake, and exhaust who runs 15.7 in the 1/4 mile. My 96 auto ran a 15.7 too with just an intake and DR mod. You 2 should race again from a start and I bet it will be different. Not bad for 175 hp stock.

bijan you shoulda stayed in 1st. at 20mph, 1st gear should be revving at 3,000rpm. after you honk you could have WOT without hestitation nor spinning, then shift to 2nd and OD off etc.

you could have stayed with him.

FYI: on our 4th gen automagic
1st gear - 0-45mph
2nd gear - 45-78mph
3rd gear (OD/off) - 78-123mph
4th gear (od/on) - 123-until you crash mph

the best WOT point without downshifting manually is at 3,600rpm, which should be 2+mph above last gear's redline.

learn how to drive automatic manually is extremely fun as well

well...personally i'm not a very aggressive driver. i dont' speed too much an di don't WOT too much as well.

i've been shifting manually for the last 40k on my max. (both upshift and downshift). even though people says i'm driving an automatic it will shift itself, but i would like to have more control over my car. i usually shift at 3,000rpm every gear, and downshift back to 3,000rpm to the previous gear to help me brake and stop, or react and accelerate back to speed. here's my daily shifting point:

upshifting
1st gear: to 3,000rpm, about 20mph
2nd gear: to 3,000rpm, about 42mph
3rd gear: (OD/off) to 3,000rpm, about 60mph
4th gear: (OD/on) anything above 60mph

donwshifting:
4th-3rd gear (od/off): at 3,000rpm, 60mph
3rd-2nd: at 4,000rpm, 42mph

i don't downshift to 1st gear at all. cuz i use my brake pedal.

it's all personal preference, at least that's how i control my automatic where i feel i get the most optimal control, street driving, and gas mileage. it has been working for the last 40k. tranny still holding strong.

That sounds about right really ... I believe they're 180HP at the crank at 16PSI? Which would be around 165 @ the wheels, roughly. So, 184 at the wheels means he's making about 262 @ the crank.

Not bad ... keep in mind, factory turbo cars typically run quite a bit of boost.

Besides, the 1.8T spools up about as fast as a crack head that just found $100.

my friend has a stock 97 vr6 5 spd, and beat him by a 3/4 car length at least when we race. My max is auto, with no mods yet. He's a good driver too, he's beaten Si's and what not (but then again, beating a civic is nothing to brag about), so i dunno, that's kinda weird. Did the vr6 have any mods?

ive beaten a vr6 pretty bad, we raced twice, both from a stop.

He's stock 5-spd, I'm Auto with Intake/Y-pipe/Test pipe

1st time I pulled 1 car before we hit 20, then I just barely was pulling ahead until I reached the end of 2nd gear, (I think when he shifted to third) I pulled bad on him, 1 car lenghth became 3 quickly, then 4 lenghths, then it's over @ 95mph.
2nd run he gets a perfect start, no wheel slip, hes ahead of me by 1/2 car length, but by 30 I'm ahead of him slowly pulling away like before, then it's 95 mph again, won by about 3 car lengths.

It was pretty fun, I thought it would be a bit closer, but was plesantly suprised.

DO you have a dead Knock Sensor.

I have found out that if you are stock( with intake) manually shifting is not good. I raced a 01 max(auto) and I would manually shift all the time and he would pull on me in 2nd gear. I would have about 3/4 - 1 car lead on him in first but in second he would always come back and have a 1 car lead by hte time it shifts to 3rd. So I left it in drive(shifts at 6000 at WOT) and he did not take a lead until about 90.

My cousin's got a '96 Jetta VR6 5spd...it's pretty fast up top, but off the line it doesn't seem as quick as the Maxima; then again, I haven't driven a stock maxima in a long time.

He got the car when mine was laid up w/a blown tranny. Every time I saw him he told me he was going to race me when I got my car fixed.

I fixed my car and let him take it to the store. When he came back, he had a grin on his face and said "I'm not even gonna bother asking to race you any more. I'd get smoked!"

I'm saying that the 1.8T spools up extremely fast and hast lots of low end power. I think full boost is at around 2800RPM - or something very low like that.

The 1.8t's are not very fast stock. I ran one a couple of weeks ago. I was in 2nd gear (~20mph) when I discovered he was trying to race. I just hit the gas and kept going (never liked jamming into 1st at speed). I passed him quite easilly.

Those engines like mods, though.

Here's my take on vw's. I'm super unimpresed. I have 5spd with jwt ecu,y pipe, intake. My three good friends all have vw's. MY first friend has a gti 1.8t golf. He has intake, exaust, n75 that makes it hold boost, and greddy boost controler, and forged racing diverter valve. Same thing as a blow off valve. And when we race he runs full boost. 18 pounds spikes but hold 14 pounds. And I can take him by a car off the light all the way through third. His car is 2000 came with 150 horse stock. My other friend has one of those sick new r32 gti's the 240 horse all wheel drive one's. But if I race him from a roll he's like exactly *** fast as me. I'm so not impresed with vw. That's there fastest car aginst a 95 maxima. oh well, And no lie's at all here

the vw passat 1.8t's only put out 155 hp compared to a jetta or golf 1.8t putting out 170. I dunno why the difference, but the passat's are tuned down

Man I don't know what's wrong with your car. First of all you should of went until the top of 3rd gear that's when you pull the most on people. Second of all I walked all over my friends vr6 jetta that was stick. He took off a little from me on the start then I got a little in front of him by end of second, in third I was just flying away from him. Maybe it's because I got a y-pipe, but I walked all over him like it wasn't a problem.

1.8Ts are slow stock. But once chipped they are quick. Same with the VR6. Trust me, when they're chipped, leave them alone unless you have a VQ35! How I know? My cousin has a chipped 1.8T.

I tested a VR6 a while back and man are they are fast as heck ... my back was practically pinned to the seat on my test drive

Even the 1.8T is a fast beast, that's another VW motor that doesn't mess around. I know the 1.8T first started w/ 150hp, then the last few years the hp. was raised to 170, then to 180hp, so it was pretty much a chip change and correct me if I'm wrong, an increase in boost on the turbo?
