New Maxima owner... erratic tachometer and clutch kit question

I just bought a '95 GXE 5-speed with 137k miles.

The tachometer isn't functioning right... rarely it would follow the engine's revs... most of the time it vacillates wildly, shooting back and forth quickly and quivering at incorrect RPMs. The previous owner, the 2nd owner of the car, said that the car had this problem when he first got it, and never attempted to fix it. Does anyone know how to fix this? I'm sick of having to watch the MPH meter, unable to listen to the engine (I'm deaf)...

Also, the clutch is shot. I'm looking around for a clutch kit now... does anyone have any recommendations for a good one that'll last a long time and spirited, aggressive driving?

Thanks for the help.

i too am experiencing the tach issue, just started this morning..i was thinking it might be a ground, so ill keep u informed as i discover thru adventuring into the vehicle(hopefully) ,and as far as a good spirited clutch kit, exedy makes bomb sh*t so id suggest that...stay away from act and spec.

I see a fix for a 3rd gen tachometer by replacing the electro cap. Mine is currently hitting 8k rpms when it's really at around 2-3k. It's all over the place. I've seen similar things in other tachs.

Whatever teh fix for the tach is, it involves pulling the cluster. Likely replacement is necessary, but possible it is a loose or poor solder flow on the connection.

There are always folks selling clsuters here, just look at the 4th gen classifieds.
