real HID bulb anti-glare shields?
real HID bulb anti-glare shields?
Hey guys... I've been warned by a couple of police officers about the glare from my headlights. They're already aimed down, so I was thinking is it doable to get a piece of thin metal I can fix in place on top of the bulb, so it shields some of the light from going upwards? Will it be dangerous or cause anything to short out? I don't want to put eyelids on the headlights.
Thanks any advice welcome!!

I highly doubt there's going to be a shield made for our cars, or the 9004 bubl i don't know... Casper Electronics makes an HID shield, but only for H4. Go to www.hidforum.com and do searches on maxima and 9004.
Check this link out:

towards the bottom of the page is what an OEM HID shield would look like on NON-Projector housings.
Good luck
What I don't get is why the conversion kit makers didn't just use D2R bulbs instead of D2S, ie. with the lower part blocked off? They know these kits will be installed in conventional headlamps...
I suppose it's becaus D2S bulbs are used in projectors, and some cars do have halogen bulbs in projectors. Conversion kits come in both D2S and D2R bulbs, so it's up to the customer.
I do use a D2R bulb, but there's still a lot of glare. It's good for me in the sense that I see road signs and markings a lot better, but I guess it's not as good for other drivers.

Are you sure you're using D2R bulbs? I've been looking for D2R rebased 9004 bulbs and i can't find them anywhere... I don't think they were even made....Rebased bulbs are only made in D2R's. Someone correct me if i'm wrong please.
Another solution to your glare is to paint the bottom half of the bulb with high temp. paint.
I believe mine are rebased 9004 D2R bulbs. The bulbs are Osram.
So, putting the self-made shield on the lower side of the bulb cuts some of the glare? That's interesting. I understand the explanation that light coming from the bottom half of the bulb is reflected upwards, but I thought the source of the glare problem with Maximas is that in 9004 housings, the reflectors are horizontal and there's nothing on the top of the housing to reflect the light down?

Try and find out if you can if the bulbs are D2R or not. I would really like to know.
I had the same question awhile back and posted it on the HIDforum. Someone suggested painting the bottom half of the bulb. I sent my bulbs to the board memmber and he painted them for me with black high temp paint. I put them on and the glare was cut out tremendously. I did more research on making shields, how to cut glare, etc. and saw that painting the bulb would cause more heat and therefore shortening the life of the bulb. So i said, **** it and start off anew. So i did my best to take off the paint and bought new bulbs and left it alone. So far no one has complained, but then again, i hardly drive my car at night.

I am pretty positive my bulbs are D2R. They're the ones where the bulb has some sort of dark shield on them (as opposed to the D2S bulbs that are clear). Just to give you an idea, my bulb (just the bulb, not the base) looks somewhat like the one in this pic:
http://www.powerbulbs.com/products/p...d=hid&type=D2R
The base fits perfectly into my headlight housing with no modifications, like a normal halogen bulb would.
I did some research before buying the kit and definitely wanted to order a D2R bulb, since D2S bulbs in a reflector type housing creates even more glare. I just didn't realize that glare could also be bad with a D2R bulb.
Thanks, I read a lot of the posts on hidforums about building a shield. I'm a little unsure of whether I will screw up anything trying to build the shield with metal, but maybe i can try something with aluminum foil as one post suggested.

Yeah, I know of someone else who has Osram bulbs that are D2R. None of the far east kits do though that I know of. I definitely think that would really help with the glare problem in conjunction with lowering the aim.
