engine bay

what all should i cover when degreasing/ cleaning my engine?

alternator...did that to my last car and pressure washed my engine bay...didn't cover my alternator and sure enough 2 days later it went.

i cover the alt and both fuse boxes under the hood as well as the exposed part of the intake system (i have a hold in my stock airbox that I have to cover up). Also, i just use grocery bags to cover these things.

why cover up the alternator? is it the degreaser thats bad for it or is it the high pressure water? i never really thought about covering anything up when i cleaned my engine bay, i thought that it has to be waterproof anyways.

alternators produces electricity. Water and electricity don't mix. The degreaser is probably bad to as it may conduct electricity as well. If you leave the engine off long enough so that almost every drop of water has evaporated, you might not have to cover up anything. The only reason to cover up stuff is so when you go to start you car, there isn't any water/liquid puddles creating short circuits under the hood.

as a person who has owned 3 maximas and washed the engine of each one. you do not have to cover the alt. you dont have to cover anything. what kind of degreaser are you using? THAT! is the real question..

there should be instructions on the can on what to cover, just use some common sense.
