High idle after throttle body cleaning?

I just cleaned my throttle body today, man did I get some gunk out of there. Anyway, the car runs great now, but it seems to idle high. When I first start it, it will go up to ~2k rpm then after a few seconds come down and idle just above 1k when in neutral, where it was ~800 before. In drive it sits right around 1k when before it was ~600. Do I need to reset the ecu or something, or will this just clear up by itself?

But do I have to do anything to fix it, or will it just go back to normal?

you could readjust your TPS so that it idles a little bit better. It's funny that I JUST cleaned mine out too.

To do this, start the car, let it warm up. Take out the the red 3-wire socket on the TB. There's a phillips screw close by, that you can adjust to get it to idle just where you want it. And then plug the TPS back in. (credit goes to BlueBOB for teaching me this)

I experienced the exact same. I recently cleaned my TB and IAC valve and I tinkered with the throttle adjustment screw to get the RPMs down a bit on start. Today, several weeks later, it's still revving to ~2000 RPM on cold starts, settling down to ~1500 for a minute or two before idling at 800 to 900.

The screw I turned didn't seem to do much, what's this about taking out the red 3-wire socket/TPS? I'm pretty sure the screw I turned was the idle adjustment screw and it was standard, not Phillips, and easily accesible (faces up) without removing anything.

My question is the following: is 2000 on a cold start normal, and we were all just used to the way a VQ with a dirty TB starts (only reaches 1500 or something)?

I had the exact same problem when I cleaned my TB a month ago or so. Car would step up to 2000 rpm then down to 1200 then eventually 800 when warm and stopped at a light. Well, even though everyone said it was allright, I got skeptical. Today I took off the AICV and cleaned it thoroughly. I removed every single part on it and cleaned them. Took me about an hour or so. I got lucky as I didnt strip any screws. (Yean, I know strip and screw in the same sentence.. hehe) Anyways, after all is said an done. Car now idles at 1400rpm when I start it, when I coast it gets down to 1000 or so and it sits at around 650rpm at a red light. I feels much smoother too !!!

I think the removal of the TPS sensor is important before adjusting the idle screw. The TPS assumes that whatever it is set at is the idle speed. And so you take it off set it to your proper idle speed and then put it back on. Somebody who ain't a newb like me correct me if I'm wrong...

Another thing you guys might want to try, and this is also what happened to me and another buddy of mine. Because the throttle body is gunked up it never really closed all the way. After it's cleaned up it's actually got some play. But a while ago, I tightened up the throttle cables to get better response. Combined with a tightened a cable at a partially opened throttle will give you a higher idle. So I loosened the cable, sprayed some WD-40 on the springs to make the throttle shut all the way, and tightened the cables back up. Works beautifully now.

Same here also. Cleaned the TB and the idle jumped up really high to about 2000 and then slowly came back down after a minute or two. My idle went sky high too, from 650 to 1000 after the cleaning. So to fix things out I just turned the idle screw to re-adjust the idle....and the max is purring like a kitten. And It sounds a lot meaner now too.

The IACV Valve is located to the right/behind the throttle body. It is held in place by 3 x 12mm bolts. You have to remove the 3 bolts to take it off. One of them is hidden (the back one) by a plate holding a sensor that is itself held in place by a 10mm screw that you have to remove as well before getting access to that 12mm bolt. You will also notice that there are 4 connectors on this assembly that need to be unplugged before you can remove it and some hoses that need to be disconnected as well. Once out and in your hand, you can pretty much remove all the screws on there and clean the hell out of it. I used a toothbrush and some intake cleaner to clean it real well. It was FULL of gunk. It's real easy to do and shouldnt take more than an hour overall.
