installed JWT ECU
I installed the JWT ECU on my '96 auto a few days ago. I really got to tested it out yesterday. At first, I didn't know that I had to manually shift the auto to utilize the new raised rev limiter. Eventually, I knew that I had to manually shift the auto if I want to take advantage of the raised rev limiter. Leaving it in D, it would still shift at the factory ECU limiter. The seller told me the ECU had a 7k rpm limiter. Either he was mistaken or my gauges were way off. I found out the limiter was at 7200 rpm. He could be right because I think our gauges are a bit off anyway. I noticed another thing. With the factory auto ECU, even though the limiter is at 6500, if I manually shift it, I have to shift a tad early. I would have to shift at about 6300 because there would be a slight delay before it shift. You auto guys know what I'm talking about. When I shift at 6300, by the time the tranny shifts, it would be right at 6500. If I shift at 6500, with the delay, it would hit the rev limiter. Now with the JWT ECU, I noticed if I shift at 7000 rpm, it would shift right at 7000 rpm...just like a 5spd would. There's no delay. I got a question, now the rev limiter is at 7200 rpm, should I shift right at 7200 rpm or maybe 7000 rpm? I did a few test shifting at 7200 rpm, no problems came up. Although without a MEVI, I couldn't feel much. There's no question that my car is a bit faster with the JWT ECU. I can't wait until I get the MEVI install this week. Yes, I got the MEVI too. I don't plan to manually shift all the time, mainly save it for the track. I will manually shift it if let say a dumb ricer want to play. Even if I leave it in D, with the JWT ECU and MEVI, I think I will still feel the gains. Btw, with my car in D with the factory ECU, it would shift early. I know some autos shift at redline if in D. Well, my car didn't do that. With the JWT ECU, even in D, it shifts at redline.

I'll definitely be there Saturday. The CAI and ypipe gaskets haven't got here yet. Hopefully, they'll be here before Saturday, so I could slap those two on. I'm going to lighten things up a bit for the track this time. Whether it will help or not, who knows, I know it can't hurt.

Btw, Jaime said he want to run me after the MEVI is fully up and running. He hinted that I would probably be right there with him, but I'm not an idiot. The MEVI will definitely help, but I'm prepare for another spanking by a 5spd.

Ceasars: thanks, but I think the gaskets should get here within these two days.
JWT ECU owners(5spd and auto): do you shift at your limiter or a little bit earlier? Like if you had a 7200 rpm limiter, do you shift right at 7200 rpm or maybe like 7k rpm? I'm not sure if it will make any difference. Where do you guys shift?

Figure out exactly where the fuel cut point is and time your shift to occur right before that point. for me it's an indicated 7100

Fuel cut point? How do I find out that? I'm not sure if this is it, but if I shift in 1st, when I get to 7300 rpm, it wouldn't go any higher. Just keep bouncing off the limiter. Is that it? I think the limiter is at 7200, at 7300 it just sounds weird, doesn't sound good.

Nevermind on the fuel cut point question, I got it. Mine is at 7300 rpm.
Ran into a snag in finishing up the MEVI install. The vaccum setup went without any problem. However, same can't be said about the Harlan RPM switch. Got everything wired up, but the switch wasn't working. Jaime said the switch is probably fried. WTH? If that's the case, the seller should have told me that instead of selling me a fried switch. I could have order one ahead of time. Now I'll have to wait until a new switch comes in. I have it ziptie open for now. It's not going to hurt the car having it ziptie open like that all the time would it? Jaime said my lowend will suffer though. Great...now what I'm going to do when I take the car to the track Saturday?

What is happening that you think the switch is fried?
Running with the VI tied open will not yield the best results. I wouldn't spend the time and money to run without it operating correctly.
If you really want a working VI by saturday, you can order the summit switch tonight, pay for next day delivery and get it installed by saturday. The summit switch is what you should be using anyhow.

Too late for the Summit switch. I already order a new Harlan switch and all the wires are hooked up. When I get the new switch, all I have to do is to hook it up and do the programming. Jaime showed me how, very easy to do.
Jaime did most the install for me. He told me that the switch wasn't working. And he did a number of MEVI install with the Harlan switch, so he know what's he doing. So, I'm going to take his word for it.
No, I'm not doing the drop resistor mod. I'm going to manually shift it.

Regardless of whether or not you manually shift it, drop shifting will place some of the VI's top end power to the tires when you shift. Plus, it'll save your tranny from wear and tear, and you should "technically" be a faster.
The drop mod is a $5.00 15 minute mod.
Add it to your list.

Yeah, that Harlan switch is trash. Jamie and Baggy will tell you that I called them both (1/2 hour each call) trying to get that dumb thing to work. I even had Confused on the phone. That damn thing robbed me of a weeks vacation and my wife was really upset about it.
I fried mine last year when I was having issues getting the solenoid to work. I emailed Harlan and he never responded so I threw it in the trash. I have the Summit switch now also and its a good investment because you'll never fry it. I'd say just get it as a backup.
I need to get my VI back on soon though so I can hit the track this Spring.

No, I'm still in New Orleans. Jaime is down here for the week. Yeah, I might just get the Summit one for a backup.

OMG! I'm such an idiot! I tried to clean up the wires a bit in my engine bay and to recheck if all the connections were right. I noticed that I hooked up the 12v power wire to the - side of the battery! WTH?! Doh!!! No wonder it didn't work. I got the + and - side of the battery mixed up. I haven't work on the car for awhile, so it slipped my mind. I'm still at school, so I can't correct it right now. Have to wait until I get home. Great...what the heck am I going to do with the extra Harlan and Summit(yes, I just ordered one this morning and chose the next day delievery option as backup)RPM switch. So maybe there's nothing wrong with this current Harlan switch. Man...Jaime is going to kill me. I wasted his time trying to figure out why it didn't work. Well, I keep you guy updated.
