Rear end noise

I'm experiencing a sharp thunking sound from the rear end whenever the suspension travels over a bump. It's a sharp sound like something is loose, but I can't find anything loose, and the trunk is empty. Are Max's known for anything that fits this description? It's a stock '98 with no suspension mods.

Thanks in advance.

Removed it to make sure. That wasn't it. Seems to be more central than that, but really hard to pinpoint an origin.

I have a 1995 Max-SE with approx. 211K miles (gift from brother). I recently installed a PROGRESS Rear Sway Bar(RSB) and began hearing the "sharp thunk" sound immediately after passing through a moderate dip in the road. The noise can be avoided if I carfully and slowly pass through the dip. I have also observed that the "sharp thunk" is less likely to occur when I have a full tank of gas. I have carefully checked and re-checked the RSB installation and I have not been able to detect any sings of involvement. I have had my favorite shop, that routinely cares for my MAX, check it out and they were able to duplicate the "sharp thunk" but could not identify the source of the problem after examining all of the suspension and steering components. I paln to install Tokico Illumina struts with PROGRESS springs next so maybe that will clear-up the noise.

I'll post again after new struts are installed.

Would appreciate any comments on my circumstances and any other additional info.

THANKS in ADVANCE!

Well I'm not sure what could be your problem but after I modified my y-pipe, the flex part was too long and the resonator bangs under the car if I go over bumps too hard. From the right side of the car, hold your b-pipe(part after the resonator) and shake it hard to see if the noise that you are hearing is the resonator banging.

In our 95SE I'm also hearing a similar noise but I haven't been able to locate the source as yet...I'm not sure if it could be a bad shock.

I used to have 1990 Maxima and it would do the same. I'm not sure what it is but I would check all shocks
