Ok, apparently I need a new torque converter. What is a decent price for this replacement with labour? The guy I took it to has a really good repuation for being honest but I still want to double check. I don't yet have a final price from him because I havent taken it in just yet. What have you guys paid in the past? I'm broke and I live in Columbus, Ga if you guys know anybody around here thats good.

 

For just labor I am guessing around $1000 maybe a little less. I know labor to do the transmission rear main seal is $600. Not a bad idea to get this done at the same time. I believe you have to get to the torque converter through the rear of the tranny. The seal is $15.00 or so.

 

Never need my converter replaced on my maxima. On my nissan stanza I did. A guy charged me $275 labor, and made me take my torque converter to a local rebuilding place. They charged me $90.

So total was $365. Tho basically you gotta drop the tranny....pull off torque converter (like pulling off a clutch), then rebuild the torque converter. Atleast that's what I hear you gotta do. If I had to do it again, I wouldn't be so afraid to DIY.

 

how do you know your TQ is going dead anyway?

 

Well mine was pretty easy to diagnose. When you pressed on the gas, the engine would spin, but the tranny wouldn't. So it was like having no linkage between the engine and wheels. Hence the bearings or something in that thing broke...and when the mechanic took it apart...the output shaft on that torque converter was flopping around...it broke. As for a marginallly working one...i have no clue.

 

well im assuming that when they break they break and there is no way to know...at least i hope.
