Painting intake manifold
i was just doing some looking in the engine and i decided i h8 the way my intake manifold looks, i really want to paint it black, or maybe a dark grey. i already know what paint i need and everything but i wanted to know is it a good idea to paint it while it is on the engine. i got some supplies out the house and covered everything up pretty nicely and am sure there will be no overspray on any of the other parts. i just wanted to know is it a god idea to paint while still on the car because there is absolutley no way i can take it off and paint it.( i only have 1 day off a week and i know i will have no time to remove, prep, paint, dry, and replace onto the engine in 1 day.) i just wanted to add a different look until i got my mevi. let me know guys. and also, ive seen a max on here with carbon fiber wire loom, where can i find some.

ok i gotcha.... i just wanted to add a different look to my engine. i dont like that silver color cause as soon as i give it a good clean it just gets dirty again, which i understand since its an engine :-) i figure with a black color it would look alot less dirty.

You need to take it off otherwise it will look like ****. There are just too many brackets to tape around. I need to do mine again cause my dumb@ss mom touched it with her oven mit when she took it out. She was all mad that it was stinking up the house so decided to pick up the thing and take it out. I used one coat of Engine enamel primer and two coats of red engine enamel. When I redo it I will use clear coat to help it shine. Also, cleaning it is very easy. I've cleaned it once in 4 months and it only took 5 minutes with Meguiar's Show Shine.

I attempted to polish it myself but gave up after 4 hours and only having a 2"x2" semi polished area. Since I had it off and didn't want it to look uneven I painted the bia. Its basically free and very easy.

hum.. can i ask why it was in the oven? How do you do this? I would like to paint mine black. What temp enamel did you use? How do u remove the intake manifold? Would i need a new manifold gasket? How long does it take to dry? What do i need to take off? Do i need to remove the injectors? While im painting the intake manifold i would like to paint my valve cover. I think im gonna paint it a graphite color. It would go good with my intake. What kind do paint would i use on that? Same thing?
thanks a lot

It was in the oven to bake the paint. It is very simple but lengthy. I used 500 degree and it is totally fine. I would imagine the the highest temp the manifold ever sees is 250-300. In hindsight I realized that I didn't need to bake the paint so that saves a step for you. You don't need a new manifold gasket because its not the thin paper type. I'm fairly sure its rubber actually. You will probably need a TB gasket though because you need to remove it to paint that area and mine ripped when I took it peeled it off. Its only $7 a dealer. You need to apply all coats of engine enamel within one hour of each other. If you do it two hours later you're fxcked because it will all chip instantly when you put the next coat on. It takes about a day to dry to touch but 5 days to dry completely. It takes an hour or two to get it off but putting it back is much more difficult due to tight space along the firewall. I'm going to do my valve cover soon but am waiting because I need to get a new gasket. Same paint on that.
