Dustboots on Aftermarket struts

My AGX's should be getting here tomorrow, and I was wondering, is it a must to put on dustboots? Do they really help the strut at all with dirt etc.? Is there a poor-mans method of making dustboots or retrofitting cheaper ones if they are a must?

Thanks

dustboots are not necessary. my friend doesn't have any dustboots on his koni yellow and his shocks are fine for 2 years+.
