Tranny take a crap??
When i got in my car today the shifter was stuck in the reverse position for some reason. It took quite some effort to get the shifter into the neutral position. When i did this i heard a clunk and the car jerked as if all the weight of the car was resting on the tranny. I had my parking brake up mind you. Now the tranny is stuck in 2nd gear with the shifter in neutral. The only other position i can put the shifter into is 5th gear. It wont go anywhere else. Can someone with knowledge and experience with transmissions please chime in and clear this up for me??

I see two rods. I guess one would be the control rod and the other would be the support rod. Should i disconnect both of them from the the transaxle and the shift lever? If so, what should i check for?
BTW, what does the support rod do?

You need new synchros probably. Same exact thing happenned to my friend. His car wouldn't go into N or any gear besides 2nd. His synchros are shot, differential bearing, leaking axle seals.

Why would i need new synchros?? The shifter wont go into gear even with the car off, which would eliminate the synchros and the clutch as the culprits.
It's actually stuck in 2nd gear. When i drove it while it was stuck in second gear the car was running perfectly, no strange noises or anything. It's just that the shifter was stuck.

I noticed something when i went under the car to have a look. The control rod seal is out of place. It's not completely pushed in. I dont know if this has to do with the problem though. Maybe the tranny leaked out some fluid. Would insufficient fluid not allow the tranny to go in certain gears even when the car is off?
There's another thing that's still confusing me. Why is the car in 2nd gear with the shifter in the neutral position?

well in 2nd gear the shift rod would be pushed in. not shure exactly whats up without looking at it so its hard to tell. maybe something with the detent system and not allowing the striking rod to move around freely

When i went under to have a look it seems like the rod wasnt pushed in all the way, yet it was still stuck in 2nd gear with the shifter still in the neutral position. I hope it's not the gearbox...
BTW, i detached the control rod from the yoke and when i tried to move the yoke back and forth it wouldn't budge...
