Coils
Hey,
I just registered today and it's the first time I posted a message..
I've been driving around with my cel on for a while now, I took it to autozone to get the free reading and they told me it was my o2 sensor. Knowing this part is slightly expensive and does not require immediate attention I was reluctunt to replace it right away.. With gas prices sky high,I brought it to a mechanic to get it fixed. He convinced me that Autozone's reader does not always reflect an accurate reading and that it would be best for him to read it again .. So he tells me its not my O2 sensor and that I need to replace all my coils and spark plugs. Spark plugs, fine because I'm at 60K but is it nessecary to have to replace the entire 6 coils?? Could only a few or maybe even 1 be faulty?? These coils are $80/piece..!
~Also, is it shady that I got two different readings from two different people?
Any info will help!
Thanks!

since u have a 99, u might have a bad coil. get them to ohm out the coils and the correct resistance should be 1 or infinite. . replace only with standard mitsubitshi coils. u can get them at jerryromenissan.com enter the promo code of "maxima" to get 12% off the price. they are $64 each over there.
Are you a girl? ( I was thinking from the name...)
Anyway, get someone you trust to either check your coils or get someone to take your car for you to a mechanic. They have the tendency to take advantage of women when it comes to cars.
I would bet that you could have a coil or two that are bad, but it is highly unlikely that all 6 are bad. That is a chunk of change.
Don't get the Hanshin replacement coils, only get the Mitsu ones as stated above. The Hanshin coils are what you have right now and they are bad.
Get NGK spark plugs only. The OEM ones are platinums, but you can use coppers for a lot cheaper. The number is BKR5E-11(don't let them sell you the ones that say BKR6e-11). These will need to be replaced every 30k miles, rather than 60k, but they are 1/3 the cost of the plats.
Try this out before you go doing the coils:
1. change spark plugs
2. change fuel filter out(they are cheap....like $10 or so)
3. start using 91+ octane if you are not already.
4. I was getting some hesitation for a little while in mine and everyone was telling me to go drop $350 on some coils. Well, I did these things, and it is gone. Plus, my car runs a lot better now.
Oh, and welcome to the .org.

Hey, thanks for the help. I called the mechanic after I read this to ask what kind of coils and spark plugs he was using. I think he was offended I even asked judging by the attitude he gave me.. but he did say he used the mitsu coils and the platinum tipped spark plugs so I'm happy about that.. just not happy about the $850.00 bill.!!..
Thanks again!
and yeah I'm a girl..

I know, but I don't know anyone who knows how to do that.. It's not like I'm going to try and attempt it myself. (remember I'm a girl)
But the bill also does include my 60K tune-up and everything that falls under that.
Hopefully I won't be seeing the mechanic for a long time after this..

yeah, I hope not either.
Even though you are a girl, you could have read a couple of things and done it yourself. I mean, plugs and coils are not hard at all. You just have to get a little dirty, but then it washes right off.
I mean, even you, not knowing how to change the plugs, could probably change all 6 in less than 45 minutes.
Keep that in mind for next time.
What do you think you are going to mod on your maxima?

I'll keep that in mind, thanks.
As far as modifications, I'm not going to do anything cosmetic, other than what I've already done, tint the windows. I'm pretty satisfied with how my car looks,
As for performance mods I'm not sure, any ideas?

you need to get a y-pipe. I would suggest either getting in a Warpspeed y-pipe group deal when they come along(that is what I did), or just going to www.budgetexhaust.com and ordering one from there. They are both good, and if you don't get in a group deal, it is better and cheaper to go with the budget one.
That will give you a lot more power.
It increases like 15hp.

There is no way all 6 coils would have been bad. Ive done coils and tested them on 2 99 maximas and I've never seen all 6 of em bad. Either way, it may be a good idea to just get it out of the way now, but it sounds like he did try to take advantage of you.
As for performance mods, start with the basics. Injen Intake, Greddy cat back, budget y-pipe, and then maybe some suspension. Also, if you're not into high performance car stereos, an underdrive pulley would also be a fairly decent mod.
Hope this helped

I've said it once, I'll say it again...get rid of the Korean coils and go with the Mitsubishi. I replaced the front three and going to do the back three ASAP. 99s are notorious for bad H coils...Dealer wanted to sell me another Korean POS and I laughed in his face. I'll spend the extra $$ any day for decent coils. BTW, car has run fantastic ever since.
