Hood Struts

I bet most people here have hood struts that no longer support their hood. There are eBay actions for "OEM" Maxima hood struts for about $60 shipped (pair). Rockauto.com has AC Delco hood struts for $19.43 (each, I think) which fit the 4th-gen Maxima.

Would anyone who's replaced their struts care to comment about brands, prices, etc.?

And if enough people have bad hood struts, someone should start a group deal!

I used a Vise Grip before I got new ones. I bought the StrongArm hood struts/lifts/supports and it came with a lifetime warranty when I bought it this past December. Some other people who have bought these (from Jan. to now) have said that the warranty has been shortened to one year.

I got StrongArm #4524 http://www.partsamerica.com/PartDeta...artNumber=4524 (as you can see the warranty is 1 year now)

These stores (http://www.partsamerica.com/StoreLocator.asp) have it and Murray's Discount Auto and maybe CarQuest. Look for a local store and get some prices. The ones from AutoZone have lasted a year or maybe 2 for other people and they're the same price. I've had mine since Dec. and they're still nice and strong so far. Hopefully these will last 2 years and then I'll go get a new set under the lifetime warranty I got (too bad they still don't have it)

Thanks for the info. If it's $32.99 each with only a 1-year warranty, I'd buy cheaper ones which will probably last at least a year anyway...

I just called Checker. They have struts called Steady Lift that fit a 4th gen Maxima and they're $26.99 each. LIFETIME WARRANTY he told me. Looks like they're made by the same company: http://www.arvinmeritor.com/products...arket/app1.asp

Maybe the SteadyLift is a higher end strut, hence the lifetime warranty? But they're cheaper? Who knows...

$50 for a pair of Nissan OEM struts? That's not a bad deal.

i got my strongarms through my dad's work for $10 each. they've lasted 2 years or so and i haven't had any problems with them. no warranty but if they ever fail, they're not that expensive anyways.

you could always just use vice grips as some people do because that seems to work. or make yourself a custom prop as a few other members have.

Yeah, I've been using two "custom props": either a poster tube at one corner of the hood (can be knocked out easily) or my head (no fun). I figured it's time to just shell out the money and get some new struts. I'm going to a meet on Sunday and it would be nice to leave my hood up in a non-ghetto fashion.

i used to use a golf club to hold my hood open, then I went to Advance Auto Parts and picked up a set of hood shocks for like 37 bux, they came with a lifetime warranty.

Shows up as $17.49/each for me I guess they're ripping you and the California guys off

I got mine for about $40 w/ tax for a pair. The regular price was $22, but Murray's had a 10% off sale around Christmas time. See if your local stores are still giving the lifetime warranty
