Wheel Bearings Changed - Now Squeaking
Wheel Bearings Changed - Now Squeaking
I changed both front wheel bearings a couple months back and have gone a couple thousand miles since. Now all of a sudden I am getting a rubber squeaking sound from both sides. Not so obvious at higher speeds but REAL obvious (ie embarrassing) at like 20mph and lower. Sounds kind of like taking a new bike for a ride around a department store - like new rubber tires on a clean floor.
But its definately not the tires. I jacked it up and pulled one of the wheels. I can turn the hub/axle and hear the squeak without the wheel on. Its hard to isolate whether it is from the axle or the bearing. But since one of the axles is brand new and both wheel bearings have been changed I'm thinking it has to be bearing related. (same sound on both sides)
Any thoughts? Maybe the bearing seals or something? I know they are new but maybe they are not greased properly or something? My brother in law changed them for me.

Is your brother in law a professional mechanic?
Loose bearing seals could certainly cause the squeaking you're hearing.
I had to change one of my front bearing recently because of the same problem.
Have you checked the brake pads / rotors?

Yeah my brother in law actually is a professional mechanic. I totally trust him but everyone can make a mistake if maybe he did. He works on domestics a lot more than foreign cars but I don't think it should make that much difference. I pulled the hubs and did the bearings which I bought at nissan and gave to him.
Definately not the brakes. I changed those myself this past weekend just to rule that out (new pads/turned rotors).
Not sure what to do now. I hate to pay someone to fix it but pulling both hubs is just way more than I want to get into right now. I'm assuming that I risk killing the new bearings if I continue to drive it with the squeak?
