Vibration in the engine (felt and heard)

I can feel a slight vibration through my pedals and the chasis of my car, and also hear it. It is generally heard at idle, and is quite erratic....like it'll be on and off and at some points itll be more grainy and louder. When I open the engine compartment, I cant hear it over the engine so I can't figure out where it's coming from. I saw the recent Y-pipe vibration fix but I dont have an aftermarket Y-pipe...so thats eliminated. Current issues right now with the car are only a bad lower ball joint on drivers side, and disabled ABS (broken sensor). Can't figure out, and was wondering if anyone had and ideas?

could be any random exhaust hanger, try crawling under the car and listening. try with windows opened and closed, or parked next to a wall or something that would reflect the sound to see if its inside or out. g'luck...

I have a brand new catback...did it with the old stock catback aswell. Also, I can only hear it when the windows are closed and its completely silent. With windows open, road noise takes over, and with hood open or under the car, the engine noise takes over

Some more information please:

1. Does the vibration in all gears (i.e. either in park or neutral, or in D/2/1 but with foot on brake) ?

2. Does the vibration occur when the vehicle is moving (if yes, then what speeds?)

3. If the vibration is only felt at a standstill, if you put the car in Neutral and rev it up to 1200rpm - does the vibration go away?

I have a 5 speed, generally I can only hear/feel it only at a standstill....but there has been a few 1 or 2 occasions where I still felt it for the first few seconds of starting to move. It doesn't matter which gear, or whether or not the clutch is in or out. If I rev a little, it gets too hard to feel or listen for as the engine noise takes over and everything appears normal. What makes me wonder is that it's not a constant vibration. It'll vibrate slightly for like 1 sec, then go away for 5 sec....then come back, maybe a little louder/grainier, or smaller....then go away for longer.....etc etc etc. Thats what has me confused and what makes the problem so hard to find

If its that easily drowned out, then its probably nothing serious, and shouldn't be that much of a nuisance. Think of how many vibrations and noises an engine must make that aren't in the frequencies of human hearing...

No, I don't think its that small to not worry about it. It's definatly there, and it shouldn't be. Like if someone else drives my car, they can definatly tell its not normal

Could need a tune up - i.e. plugs, TB cleaning, IAC valve cleaning, fuel filter, air filter...

Could also be that your base idle is set too low.. (thats why I asked if it happened if you rev it up slightly)...

Could it be a worn motor mount? (more of a question to the group than a suggestion).

tune up sounds like a smart idea. clogged injectors, plugs having a weak fire or none at all, bad mixture; all could cause a rough idle.

it sounds like your motor mount or tranny mount. when they go bad it starts to rest on things causing vibrations. check to see if the rubber is broke or any loose nuts. you should have 4 of them.

I have the same exact problem.

Gonna get my injectors cleaned out to see if that helps any.

the reason i say that is i just had new motor mounts put on too and i still got the same symptons as you. when i checked the other day i had a busted nut on one of the mounts so that was my problem. at least double check and make sure they put them on right.

Go in and get your power steering checked out. I recently had a steering rack go bad on an Infiniti I own and towards the end of its life it picked up some major vibration in the front end. This may not be the cause of your problem but if it is, catching it early could save you some serious money.

Well I see what you are saying but I put on the mounts myself and i used my impact gun to tighten them. I can assure you that those bolts arent coming loose by themselves I'll have to see, but I was leading towards the power steering myself, but wouldn't the vibration be only when the power steering was activated/under load (by turning the wheel)? Also, is there any way to clean injectors yourself w/o having that big *** machine?

you dont need a machine to clean your injectors. my boy did a max the other day and from what i saw he just put a bottle of injector cleaner in between the fuel lines and let the car run untill it was finished. im not sure if he had some sort of collector bottle or something, but definitley
no machine.

block off your muffler tip and see if thers backpressure, i went back to my stock ypipe yesterday afternoon, fuond out the gaskets are leakingin the car, it was causing a grainy vibration in the floor of the car, put it up on a left and discovered the flex was fine, but the gasket was leaking pretty heavily. check into it
