So, my Engine exploded at 120 mph.....

So i'm crusing along at 100-120 mph cause i'm late for work. I do this all the time btw without ever having a problem.... Well not today, all of a sudden about 2-3 minutes after pulling onto the highway my engine rpms just drop alil maybe 1k and the car begins to stutter alil next thing i know i hear debris hitting the bottom of my car and the rpms drop to 0 (all this happened in about 3-5 seconds) so i pull over to the side of the road, and open my hood, and white smoke comes pluming out from the bottom of the engine....so i drop to my knees and i see flames shooting out of a 3 inch hole in the bottom of my engine block and i'm like OH BOY this i gonna be fun!.... Then i look back down the highway to where about the problem started happening hoping i'd see a part or something to let me know what went wrong, instead i see a brush fire in the median, that one of my flaming parts started....So i call 911 and they say they've already gotten a call and there sending the fire department, which was good cause it turned into about a 20 yard long blaze before they got it under control.....So i eventually got my car towed back to my place which at least i lucked out and the AAA guy was supposed to charge me about 75 bucks and only charged me 45 on accident... i didn't realize till later i woulda tiped him even more if i did.... Oh well so most likely you'll be seeing my car on the parts for sale forum soon, i don't think i feel like getting it fixed honestly...I think i'm gonna part it out and buy a motorcycle with the money, who knows.... I've got time.... In case i do feel like dropping a new engine in anyone know about how much (not including the engine) a shop would charge me to drop it in? I dropped this one in myself about a year + ago and it was a ***** and i don't feel like doing it again..... BTW i have no clue what actually went wrong or why it went wrong, looks to me like i threw a rod but why i don't know....

Damn thats crazy, i think a shop would charge anywheres from $500-1500, really depends on where you go or who you know. Good luck on it though, if you got the cash, id say get a new engine, theres some really cheap low milage VQs out there.

LoL...Funny, no whatever went wrong had nothing to do with my install.... I never opened the engine up when i put it in and i blew a rod which is a purely internal problem so it wasn't me i swear.... Not to mention it ran fine for a year +.... I noticed that a hose either came lose (and caused the problem) or came loose because of the pressure build up...i dunno One way or another i'm out one sexy maxima at least for the time being

damn sorry to hear that Tony.

The same problem happen to my friend (his car) and i on the way back from South Padre Island. Something blew out of the back of the car and was left in the road. We had to tow it back to san antonio from corpus.

What started the fire anyways?

wow thats crazy. But i gotta ask you.

You did the install yourself and it drove fine for a year, but in that year did you drive the way you did the day the engine blew, did you drive at speeds of 120?

I gotta say im worried now cause i am "late" alot and always drive like that.

YOu should find out what went wrong.

Why you wanna get rid of it? Get a new block and go wild. It would be PITA to swap all your mods into a new max if you didn't get the bike. Now I as, what kinda bike? R6, Buell? If so I agree but if not I don't. If your rotors were slotted I'd buy 'em off you. Ironic how you removed your speed limiter and thats the speed you blew up at. Oh yeah, sorry about the troubles.

Ouch, that really sucks man, I'm sorry for you. Maybe a gas leak somewhere? I can see a small gas fire lighting up excess oil on your engine doing something like that. Anyways, if you happen to have a sunroof and decide to scrap the car, I'd be willing to buy the shade off of you

If the engine was mildly hydrolocked before it might have bent a rod and just let go now. Going 120 regularly will certainlly speed up that process, lol.

...might as well get an R1, which blows the R6 away in every single category you can think of

**** yeah. At this point I'm ready to give my soul for a bike. I'm going in tommorrow and I'm trading in my dirt bike for 500 dollars, I'm selling my ak47 for 400 bucks and I have 500 bucks saved, for a grand total of 1400 dollars. I'm trying to get this sweet gsxr 750 so we'll see if it's enough for them to finace me?

Sorry to hear that, but now you have a cool story to tell. ha ha
You lit a median on fire with your exploding car. That is hilarious.

Sorry about the loss of the max.

Used 3.0 VQs are like water. They are everywhere and are cheap to buy. Even if you want to sell the car, it still makes sense to put another engine in it.

that sux .. when you do decide to put in a new VQ, keep us posted

well, at least when the time comes that you want to sell your max and someone pulls a carfax report on it, it'll never show you replaced the motor

Did anything else on the car get fire damage ??

It may be worth the few hundred dollars to get an engine, and pop it in, as long as the tranny is ok and the main wireing harness is in tacked...when you say fire, I picture the entire engine bay up in flames, including all the little things you would need to replace..(I could start a list, but you get the drift)

Naw the fire was on the bottom of the block and VERY minimal, it didn't even scorch anything, all the parts that were really flaming musta flew off and started the fire in the median. I had changed my oil to synthetic about 6k miles ago (synthetics supposed to be good for 10K) and it still looks plenty clean (whats left in the block lol...) As far as my driving, i always drive like that, i've had that engine up to 140 at least 10 times this year and i never get on the highway without doing 120 at least once.... Never gave me any trouble before, i'm sure whatever happened was gonna happen at 10 mph or 100 mph but who know's i don't really care enough to figure it out, As of now i'm gonna probably get another engine and drop it in and fix it, cause i love my baby and i can't let her go, i think i was a bit hasty....although i am thinkin about parting out and buying a 5 speed but there hard to come by....

Well you might as well do the tranny swap while your in there. Save time and money. Synthetic is good for 10K? Anyone else car to validate? Por favor.

synthetic oil is always the best. plus if you want a stick, get a new engine with a stick and pop that in and you will have the best of 2 world. your max and a new engine with a stick. also can do you have any pics? never seen a maxima engine burn and never heard of that happening to anyone except you.

I pushed my old engine on its run to 140 (first one on that engine) when i had about 125k on it on a 1K mile trip from florida to NYC on the jersey turn
pike.... So dont' worry about the milage if you take care of your engine it'll do what you ask it to do all the way well into the 200K's what happened to my engine was an isolated incident, probably got water in a cylinder or something i'm guessing... and pics wont do much justice, the engine looks fine on top, all you can see is a hole in the bottom of the block that is about 3 inches wide 1 inch tall. Besides that the engine looks like it'll run fine (lol it won't though)
