How to cut and make red clear tails on the 95 96

I just got me a set of 96 lights cheap from ebay and plan to cut them up to do a Red / Clear job on them (Dont trust my work to cut the ones on my car up). I was remembering a link that I saw last year with pics on how to do this, I looked around and I was not able to find it again.
So hear I am asking for any help and pics you guys can give me before letting the dremel lose on the lights.

My understanding is that its possible to cut away some of the lens with a dremel. Then replace with clear from the plastic that you can get for house strip lights (clear). The plastic sheet will need to be heated and bent. I know this mod is possible with a steady hand and time. But any info I can get before I start would be of great help. If it works and looks good ill post it up.

I was thinking the same thing and I have a spare outer lens to work on, but not sure what to cut it out with. I don't have a dremel, but I'll get one in a few weeks. Got into a minor accident last week so I need to work that out first before I spend my money.

I doubt you will succeed. I honestly think your project will be one big failure and a disappointment.

Every year of the 4th gen Maxima sucks in one way or another. 98/99's suck because they cannot have an upgraded ECU like the rest. I can care less about this because I wouldn't get an ECU upgrade anyway. That is why I prefer 98/99 models. Personally, I would NOT want a 97 (and with that the 95/96) for several reasons:

1) It's obviously older than 98/99

2) It has the old rotary odometer whereas 98/99's have the digital. I know it's a stupid thing to most, but it just makes the car look much more advanced from the inside.

3) I don't care for the ECU upgrade, so why not have the newest of the 4th gen, like the 98/99.

In the end, 95/96 models suffer because of the clear tails. Yes, they can be obviously fabricated and made all custom, but less than 1% of people will actually do that. Some have resided to paint them, tint them, etc., but it's still not the same as the "clear" look most of us are after.

Duh, and how many of them don't get the SES light? Sorry man, but that's such noobish thinking on your part. That's like fitting 97-99 tails on a 95/96 and driving with a big, uneven gap

97-99 Tails don't fit the 95-96.

You said the 98 cannot get hte upgraded ECU, I was just telling you that they can. Like most 97's they get the CEL.

OMG, I'm speechless. Are you out of your mind? ...That was my freakin point

...are you messing with me or are you really this slow? Here, let me spell out something you didn't pick out: obviously 97-99 tails don't fit the 95-96, that is why I compared upgrading the 98 ECU to swaping tails between the two!

With an upgraded ECU on a 98 you will get an SES light, and that is like fitting 97-99 tails on a 95-96 and ending up with a mismatched, patchy, irregular, unequal, imbalanced, lopsided, asymmetrical, disproportionate, and irregular fit!

Kapish?

the point being, you can get an upgraded ECU for a 98, side effect being CEL, however the ECU is still fully functional in the car, so it would be like you saying you cannot get an upgraded ECU, when you really can.

Do you hear yourself? You would base your car buying on one car vs another because of a different STYLED ODOMETER. Give me a break. I see all your posts and your nothing but a D!CK. Go ruin someone else's post.

yeah, based on your "clever" analogy, that's like saying....... "you can get upgraded 97-99 tails for a 95/96, side efffect them sticking out or by cutting sheet metal out of the rear, however the tails will still be fully functional in the car, so it would be like you saying you cannot get 97-99 tails for a 95/96, when you really can.

see? you're a moron,

What the hell? You're comparing a check engine light to misfitting tail lights? They aren't the same thing. Do you honestly think that people with 97-98 Maximas would still buy the 95-96 upgraded ECU's if they had the option of buying a 97-98 ECU?? Of course they wouldn't. They do now becuase they don't have a choice. Secondly, the upgraded ECU is fully functional. Whether you can deal with the CEL or not is up to you. But you can't say there's no ECU upgrade possible because of it.

Now the 97-99 tails can fit on a 95-96 because the owners have the option of doing a complete rear-end conversion so your analogy isn't so "clever" after all either.

You, sir, are the moron. Now stop whoring this guy's thread up.

What's wrong with 97?
Not picking a fight.....just curious......
95-96 has the taillight issue, and 98-99 has the ecu issue. What's the issue with 97 besides the odometer. Maybe I don't see the issues in my gle....

You know you could get a 97 - 99 trunk, bolt it up along with 97 - 99 full set of tails and make those red clear (aka 97-99 rear conversion )

But why spend $300 on a trunk just so you can have red clears? It's just throwing $$$ away.

The point is it's possible. Boss was saying that the 95-96's suck because of the tail light and rotory odometer ( ) issue and 97-98's suck because of the ECU issue. Both can be worked around, but he just doesn't seem to get it.

my thing was that I got the spare tails cheap, to try to do this to make my car look better and if it works to help others who want to do the mod. I hope to make a start on this next week.
I know that I could buy a trunk lid and buy the lights. But why spend so much money when the cost of the mod would be $15 and alot of time. (This is if it works)
Oh I am still look for the post with pics that I know I saw last year on how to do this mod.

Best of luck on this project, I really hope it turns out well and gives us 95-96ers another cheap solution to amber other than painting like i did.

this has been done b4 but he never put an outer lens on the light. I played around with the 95/96 tails b4 and the amber and red are fused together. You should heat up the assemblies and take the lense off. Then you could cut the amber out. I had no luck with cutting the lense or new acrylic light cover straight. Its a PITA but it can be done. The only thing that will cut through the plastic good is a fast rotory tool such as a dremel. A bench grinder works too, maybe a belt sander to finish it up. But the high speed also melts the plastic. I gave up on cutting out the amber and I was going to make a whole new lense for each light. Then paint the red in. But no luck. I cant believe a brand new pair of all clears sold on ebay for $177. That is so worth it.

hw about separate the lens out of the housing (as mentioned as the oven procedure) then using a heat gun to soften the amber part out of the clear, then do just like the 97-99 frosted tail. (by ading some kind of foam)

It will look like ****. You have to glue the new lens back in meaning you'll have this nasty cut going along the whole piece. It'll just mess up how smooth the lens is now.

ok, ive never taken the taillight apart, so heres an idea, that probably wont work but it is an idea in the right direction, is the amber stained in or painted on the inside, is painted why not just sand it out? i was also thinking of how hard would it be too sand the inside of the headlights smooth so they look all clear like 97-99? again, im not saying itll work and it probably wont or someone would have already done it, but just wondering how that would work.

Jesus, BACK TO THE ORIGINAL thread...

No, the 95-96 tails do not have an amber lense...from what i have heard and can c for myself, the amber is completley tinted amber....no lenses, only amber colored plastic...the whole housing on the turn signal IS the lense

BTW, what do you guys think about me saving up all of BOSS's retarded posts and saving the links so i can post up a thread, so that people can laugh at his stupid comments, and repeated "analogies" ...

Im gona do it...LOL!!

too bad i might overload the server with too many links of ruined threads cause of his posts....its a shame....
