How to replace rear brakes.
#1
Does anyone have info concerning how to replace the rear brakes on a 4th gen? I am familiar with the fronts, but if I recall correctly the rear pistons need to be turned back into the callipers. What type of tool does this require and is it something that a local autoparts store like AutoZone sells or rents?
Thanks in advance

As usual, Daniel is spot on w/ the advice. Just to add, I actually have used some needle nosed pliers. You grab each side of the pliers w/ one hand and then press/twist the piston back into the piston bore. If the slot they provide is wide enough, you can use a piece of scrape metal and vice-grips and again press/twist. Just make sure the piston seal doesn't get stuck and twisted.

Rear calipers are similar to fronts, but with the added complication of the hand brake apparatus. The rear caliper pistons must be turned as they are pressed back into the caliper. The special tool which helps do this can be purchased at AutoZone and other auto parts stores. You may be able to substitute a pair of long-nose pliers. See the Chilton manual (page 9-9) or the Haynes manual (page 9-9). Yes, the same page in each book. Coincidence.

The process is pretty much the same as the front but I would highly suggest using the tool made for the job. It can be easily found at autozone or pepboys and it's relatively cheap. It's the shape of a cube and you use it along with a socket wrench to turn your piston in. Hope this helps.
