My family is going through a rough patch right now. I wanted to be alone in my apt but one of my buddies was throwing a party so I did the next best thing: I took my car for a long drive. At about 1:30AM, I'm on the highway, in the middle of nowhere (seriously, IA has plenty of nowhere) doing 70mph. I notice that I haven't seen a car for close to ten miles. I cut across a grassy median (where highway patrol like to sit) and head back; no cars again for 10 miles. Okay, it's safe for me to let my girl stretch her legs. I pull over to the side, manually shift into first then back to D, turn on the brights and flash the TC. I floor it and the car just leaps ahead....70....80....90...100. I hit 125 and realize, I don't have a limiter but I shut down just under 130. It was fun, demonstrated what my car was capable of and was very therapeutic.

The scary thing is that assuming the car is in tune and you're not going uphill, it would have gone over 140!

I can only imagine how much more enjoyable that would have been had I been driving a 5spd (or 6spd). Nothing quite like driving a manual to push other thoughts out of your brainpan.

I did that last Saturday night. Just felt lonely so I took my Max up 281 N above SA in TX, and let 'er rip when I found a wide open empty stretch. I hit about 122 when I remembered how much gas costs and let off the pedal. Kind of odd, I passed a bunch of Harleys after that, and when I got back home I learned that a friend of mine who rides a Harley had just died. He probably died right around the time I was out driving.
