grinding noise on startup
I have a 98 GXE with ~ 80,000. I have recently noticed a grinding noise after startup that lasts around 1-2 seconds. It almost sounds like when you turn the key too long after the car has already started, but I've confirmed I'm not doing that (I've been driving the car for quite some time 
). Does this sound like a starter problem to anyone else? What is the cost/difficulty of replacing/repairing the starter if this is what needs to be done?

Sounds like the starter solenoid is sticking - i.e. not disengaging when you release the key after the car has started. As MaximaTodd stated, you may need to dismantle the starter and regrease the moving components - in your case the solenoid. The website he provided has all the details.
