Catback - pros and cons

I have a Budget Y-pipe on the way. I have seen dyno tests on it which suggest it adds about 18 hp between about 4000 and 6000 rpm and a maximum of 30 hp at 6200 rpm.

What are the benefits of a Cattman catback system? I am not into noise, consequently I have no intention of getting a CAI at this time. I recently bought a K&N panel filter.

Is the Mid-Pipe that comes with the Cattman catback the same thing as a B-pipe?

How noisy would the Cattman catback be in conjunction with the Budget Y-pipe?

a) at idle

b) crusing at say 70 mph

c) WOT

Sorry bro, no idea. I'm about to do the same sort of thing...was thinking of a Brullen B pipe as well maybe, but I'm slightly concerned about the noise as well. Good question - anyone??

I'd be ok with a deep growl, but nothing ricey and I don't want something that droans when your cruising at say 70 mph.

Yes the cattman midpipe=b-pipe
Your car will definetly be louder at wot as well as high rpm

I remember someone saying the car was quieter with the CATTMAN cat-back that it was while stock. I think he also had a y-pipe which doesn't really make sense to me.

If you want a catback, get a muffler shop to custom make you one. It's cheaper and you can be sure to have two resonators rather than just one. That'll keep the car quieter than most catback systems.

The only way you'll get muscle car sound is with new cams. It'll be deeper with the catback; go listen to a WOT 350Z and you'll get a good idea of what you're getting. My exhaust is identical to the Z I rode in.

No. That video you saw of the max with the cams and the headers, the max was only running the headers and nothing after that. Do that to your car right now and it will sound almost the same. He also fixed the lopey idle he had with the cams by raising the idle RPMs. Please don't make **** up.

Generally, catbacks all add minimal power in small displacement or non turbo engines. You'll get about 5 hp, and a lot more noise. All small displacement engines sound terrible and ricey to me. I'm sure all the honda guys talk about how deep and powerful their car sounds too, like an american v8, but how many have you heard that actually do? Besides, it's stupid to have a 15/16 second car that tries to sound powerful. Unless you're really going all out to squeeze out all the power you possibly can, I see no reason to put on a catback other than to try to sound like you're fast. Which IMO, is just about as ricey as stickers and wings, which also try to make cars look like they're racecars. It's just a different medium for the same purpose. Stickers/wings try to make cars LOOK like they're fast when they're not, and catbacks try to make cars SOUND like they're fast when they're not. If you're going to try to get out every last HP possible, then I see why you'd resort to using a catback. Otherwise, I wouldn't bother.

your right about that but it all depends on what you do. im sure others can agree that hondas sounds like crap. its almost as if the pistons are going to shoot right out of the hood. a nice sound isnt easy to come by. if exhaust is all that you do then i agree that it is pointless but if thats just the beginning, then its a little different.

Thanks for the feedback. As I said I am not into noise. I like the quietness of the Maxima and trust the Budget Y-pipe won't make much difference in that regard. I am not going to get a CAI anytime soon and I'll pass on the Catback too. I am not in to trying to squeeze out a ton of horsepower, but I thought the Y-pipe was a good bang for the buck.

My car has only 85,000 km (52,800 miles) on it, mostly highway, and I intend to keep it for some time. So I will pass on the aforementioned mods.
