Need MAJOR Help: Which Intake to get????

I've read up about the various types of intakes available and still am sort of undecided on which one to get.

Here's what I am looking for in an Intake...
1.) Nice, beefy sound coming from engine bay
2.) Low end power increases are priority over top-end
3.) Has to be about $100 price range

This has me thinkin that I should go with a Place Racing CAI (Yes, I did read http://maxmods.dyndns.org/) Is this the way to go?

Was lookin on eBay and found these auctions... What do ya think??

CAI Unit:

K&N Air Filter (cuz the one eBay gives you is crap)

Just get a CAI off ebay and you're set. People say get a K&N over the filters that come with them but it's just a waste of money.

i would get the k&n over the cheap filter they send you. it is a $15 that could do nothing but be positive. and you know in your mind you have a good solid product.

think about a carb legal intake since getting caught with an ebay one would equate to a visit to a state station. here in ca they are popping hoods and looking at reference pics of stock engines to compare yours with.

I have the JWT cone filter and I noticed a bit of improvement in power and it has a nice growl!

Not that I mind throwing in my two cents if it helps others have informed opinions, but I read this thread and think to myself that my username says that I need to read the FAQ's and IMPORTANT stuff why???

Dude there is a lot of information out there and yes it can be anoying to look for it. It just takes a bit of time. Now If you dont want to spend that much money on an intake, get a K&N drop in and gut out the intake box. If you are willing to wait a little while, i went with the injen... personaly i like it and it sounds great.

It all depends on your preference. If you want your car to sound like a Honda, don't get the Injen. Once you break it in, the Injen sounds more like a muscle car than a Nissan. Sweet.

Again, anyone who says the max sounds like a muscle car just because of the intake needs some medical attention.

I do , in fact need medical attention.
If you pair the injen intake with a flowmaster exhaust though, the car does sound vaguely muscle-like. However, the car is still a family car and not a race car and will not come close to a muscle car.
I was just trying to give him a little help with his decision, as he probably wants a deep throaty sound and not the sound of a weed wacker (honda)

ur going to loose low end with any intake you get. i gaurantee if u drive around with an intake for a while, then change back to the stock box u will feel alot more driveability and low end torque in the seat of ur pants

Yeah. I DID read the FAQs. As a matter of fact, I always read them before I post a topic. I was asking the maxima.org members to comment on my intake setup and to add anything ELSE that wasn't mentioned within the stickies (suggestions, personal accounts, opinions, etc). That's all really.

About the JWT cone filter... you said that you noticed a power increase. Is this throughout the entire rev-range? My main priority is to increase low end power.

I think a CAI will increase your low end power (at expense of top end) at least that's what I've heard. In terms of CAI - I'm thinking place racing or a similar knockoff on ebay. We'll see. Injen is just too expensive.

Interesting. Nismos14 seems to think otherwise. This is exactly the reason why I posted this thread. Certain info the stickies don't cover.

Does anyone have an eBay CAI on a STOCK 5 speed 4th gen max? If so, please comment. Thanks guys.

get a ebay PR CAI. It's the best, and it doesn't loose high end power thats BS.

Hmm... but look at the mods you have done. Could it be that with a y-pipe, the top end loss is minimized; whereas in a stock max with a CAI, top end power loss is more noticeable?

I'm saying that I dont understand why people think that a CAI robs the car of top end power, it get's MORE air EASIER, No matter the rpm......

What i think the only thing that may affect power in a negative way, is the pipe(s) getting hot, thus taking in hot air instead of cooler/cold air. (depending on the intake)

the pipes dont get hot they are warm to the tough but never hot, at least i've never felt them get hot. anyways i think the power u loose is from the lack of pressurized air from the stock resonator being there, and i guess it can be noticed more to some people, and not as much to others.

I have the injen and when you run the motor for a long time, that pipe gets pretty hot compared to the stock piping. Your probably right about the pressurized air.

What pressurized air?? WTF? With an N/A car you are relying on atmospheric pressure, that's it.

And the Injen gets hot cus of it's close proximity to the hott *** exhaust manifolds and the hot air coming from the radiator.

LOL

Cut the driver's side panel of your airbox out and save yourself whatever you were gonna spend on intake. This, in fact, is not rocket science. Unless you go F.I. an intake is an intake is an intake.

its not pressurized air, ur right, its stored air, that makes the car not bog when u hit the gas lightly, and yeah, hacking the air box is the way to go

agreed. not quite as bling in the engine bay as a real intake, but you could spend the money you save and buy gtr badging and stuff :P imo the hacked stock airbox sounds good. quiet for regular driving. louder when you gun it. perfect.
