Purpose of Hood Lining?

What is the purpose of the hood lining? It feels almost like cardboard. Is it fire retardant or sound deadening? Is it worth keeping? I want to remove it for a cleaner look, and to put some RICER stickers on the inside of the hood (LOL).

Also, I've heard of people removing the rubber seal at the back of the hood by the windshield, which supposedly allows better airflow. Is this true? Wouldn't that allow water into the engine bay when it rains?

sound deadening meterial and it is made to cover the engine if the engine catches on fire. Itll fall right off and put it out in this situation.

I took mine out it looks cleaner without it, I think

Don't remove the rubber seal, you don't want air that's been in the engine compartment to get into the vents and ultimately into the car for a variety of reasons. If you have a slight oil leak, you'll get stinky air in, if you have a slight exhaust leak, you'll get dangerous air in.

I think it also helps with the temperture of your hood. Of course the fire proof material helps too.
