Top speed of an auto?
#42
the thing i love about the max is that the car is solid... i've never pushed it to over 100mph, but when i drove my friend's 97 accord, it felt like the body was going to fall out at 85mph! i took it right back down to 75

4DRSpeed, bolt-ons do very little for top speed. Y-pipe might give 1MPH but the rest of the other bolt ons will do nothing. MEVI/ECU is a very different story. I'd be willing to bet a well mantained VI/JWT'ed car could hit 146+.
InfiniLover, your crazy if you think the Max is a solid high speed vehicle. You need to ride in more than an Accord before you make these statements. Ride in a C5, 745, or something meant for it and you'll see that the max isn't very solid at all. Lowering it will help with this but the flexy chassis is hard to fix.

in my opinion, reaching 170+ in a maxima is very attainable, for 300+ hp guys that is. i know this post is for automatics, but redline in 4th gear in a 5 speed, is in the 132-137 range, i dont really pay attention to the speedo while goin that fast, i got better things to stare at

If you were to graph the HP vs. Aerodynamics battle, it would not be a simple line either. Instead, it looks like a very steep curve that eventually yields infinity. For example, if you need 100hp to go 100mph, you might need 200hp to go 130mph; 300hp to go 160pmh; 400hp to go 170..... and so on. Look at a NASCAR car.... 700-800hp with a top speed of 200+/-.......

InfiniLover, true, but you stated that the Max was a solid vehicle. This is not true, IMO. I have to disagree because I have experienced that the chassis is very flexy due to the large doors and windows and in some cases sunroof.
To all those that are contesting. I give my final statement that Power to speed ratio is exponential. Yes, it takes much more power to gain 10MPH from 160 as opposed to zero. For example, cars built for speed on the salt flats have surpased this aerodynamic problem with extreme amounts of power. What is the land speed record right now? 400+MPH?

I also agree that bodykits do nothing but reduce top speed. Modern cars are designed in a wind tunnel. Bodykits are not and therefore if they are more aerodynamic than stock it is pure luck. Now, I have mentioned before that it would be amazing if a company took the time and money to develope a full car kit that included a new facia, side, rear, diffuser and underbody panels made of CF that increase aerodynamics and downforce at highspeeds. But of course this would never happen for our vehicle and many a rude person has shot down my idea before.

I've done 142 in my 96 SE 5spd. I wasn't at redline tho, so i think it would've dona a little more. That was enough for me...RPMs were about 6,100 or so, so I think I MIGHT be able to reach 150 if I really wound it out, but i don't wanna blow up my max for an extra 8mph...It did take a while to get to 142 tho. Oh, and make sure your tires can handle it. I have ZR rating so I'm safe to 178 mph. Good luck and most importantly, be safe. Make sure there isn't ANYONE else around when you're doing it. Don't need anyone innocent killed b/c you're trying to find out how fast you can go...anyway, good luck.

automatic maxima on a dyno, hitting the rev limit, goes 191mph. I am not saying the car would ever reach that speed but the maximum speed attainable is around 190 depending on your overall tire size. Im surprized no one has ever done that on a dyno before.

This was on the stretch of the 55 between the 22 & the 5 fwy's .. nice long and flat and COPLESS at 2am

I'm probably gonna get attacked here as I don't have the proof anymore but I took mine to 155 one night. How do I know when my speedo doesn't go near that high? I have Nprobe hooked up on my laptop. I went out for a max speed run specifically at Prineville Lake. Had about 10 miles of straight, two lane new pavement and not a sole in sight. I do believe I was pretty damn close to 6500RPM so that only leaves about 700rpm more room to go (I have a 7200rpm limiter). My guess would be max speed is approx 165-170ish?
I can tell you I will never take it that fast again. It's like floating around on a cloud in the wind at that point and so much as a flea crossing the road could really **** your day up. I also pushed my EGT's WAY farther than I should have (1550) but I knew it was a quick cool down once I stopped accelerating with that cool desert air charging in.
Edit: I forgot to mention that I was manually shifting the A/T and kicked OD at about 7K.

heh me and a fellow orger were out on a highway not too long ago. Hes boosted with 100 shot... I was topped out at about 135 with a long head start... he walked by me and had to be doing atleast 145 to 150... thats with a fully built auto tranny and engine

cop clocked me at 145 99 auto hacked box is the only mod had the needle at the trip reset going down hill i figure that was about 155 or so btw the reason i'm not rotting in jail is because i was chasing down a good friend that got into a bad car wreck and past away that night cops said they never saw a wreck that was so bad 200sx vs gmc jimmy inpack speed over 100

99automax, please use punctuation/grammar. Your post makes no sense. Did your friend die in a hit and run and you were chasing the dude that hit him or what? If so, sorry for you loss and friend.

3 a.m. and nobody is on the highway? You cant be sure of that going that speed. Anything can happen and you can even cross the median if an accident does happen...i.e. Deers, oil slick, merging traffic etc...
I would hate to be on the road when someone is doing that speed....I guess you may realize this once you know of someone who was killed in a wreckless car accident.
I don't mean to preech but I would hate to see any fellow .org members wreck themseves. Just a thought.
I would keep it to the track or not do it at all.
Nonetheless, I am amazed how fast the max goes....I think I would crap my pants going that fast.

for all you that say their car felt iffy at that speed i havn't a clue at the tires you use but i'm running a stock gxe setup and used bfg g-force kdws and seemed like the faster i went the better they bit IMO now with the toyo's i wouldn't dare go over 90 started feeling iffy at 80 got rid of those REAL quick

I got flamed for doubting Max1Man but what the hell do I know what he is running. I know Maximas are fast because I buried the needle on mine (22O kmh) about 7 years ago. I wound it about 3/4 inch off the end off the odometer . I must have been going 145 mph. How did he manage to go 155 mph. I can't see his vehicle configuration.
