Plastic box below battery, what does it do?

Just curious what the purpose of this box is that sits below the battery and is connected to the airbox. I thought this was the resonator that I always hear about but that is the thinner plastic box between the airbox and manifold, correct? Is it safe to remove the box below the battery? Thanks.

Once the stock intake goes, it doesn't need to be there. I didn't know about it until I tried to install my injen and it wasn't fitting ecause of that piece. Took it out, realized it does not serve any purpose
