High Mileage Maintanence Question

Hello,

I have been scowering this board for some time and looking for threads regarding maintanence for high mileage max's. I have a 96 Max with around 243,000 miles on it. It's been running great so I can't complain but was looking for some tips to help eliminate future problems. I do the regular oil change and that type of maintanence but other than that nothing different from what anyone else would do on a new car. Any thoughts would be great.

1. How long have you owned the vehicle, ie. at what mileage did you buy it?

2. If you are a recent owner, what have you done to it?

3. If you are a recent owner, do you have the work history?

4. When did it last have the spark plugs changed?

5. When did it last have the radiator flushed, transmission fluid changed?

6. What is the condition of the air filter?

7. When was the fuel filter last changed?

Your question should be put in context, so you can get some informed feedback!

Etc, etc, etc.

Yea but its not good to change the transmission fluid if its never been changed. From what i understand, if you cange it, it will kill it.

1. I've owned it since March 02, my uncle had owned it before I did and ran up the high mileage in his commute to work. I bought it with around 209,000 miles on it.

2. I have had one of the CV boots replaced, new exhaust, belts, filters, and spark plugs the summer of 02.

3. Don't have exact work history but regular maintanence was done to the vehicle. My uncle took very good care of it.

4. Summer 02

5. I have never had the radiator flushed or transmission fluid changed, I would have to check to see when it was done last. So not since March 02 at least.

6. I change the air filter every 3000 miles with oil change.

7. Not positive if it was replaced in Summer 02, but possible.

I didnt get my tranny fluid changed till i had hit 200K miles.
Average about 10K miles between oil changes.
If the alternator hasnt died yet, it probably will soon, 250K on an alternator is quite a bit.

Really all i do for maintenance is sparse oil changes, new brake pads, and plugs about every 100K miles.

P.S. If the fuel filter has never been changed, dont bother to do it. I tried replacing mine for the first time at 215,000 miles and car ended up not starting and having to go into the dealership for a week before it would run again. Apparently swapping it out introduced "gunk" into the fuel lines and severly clogged the injectors.

Go to Napa and buy Seafoam for your gas and oil.
Buy the Seafoam ATF additive.

Use the gas and oil additives often. My max has over 150k and this has helped a lot.

I have a 97Se with 234,00 miles on it. I bought the car from a dealership in September of 1999 with 46,000 miles on it (average about 3,000 miles a month on commute to work). I have changed the oil every month since then and have not had any major problems, only minor things like replacing the starter, radiator, new exhasust@227,000 miles.
