Early build 95 quirks?

I'm running into 2 problems that should be really simple, but are really bugging me. First, Check engine light. I followed the reset/check directions and nothing happens. I just replaced the bad O2 sensors and the car runs great, so I really only need to clear the light for now.

Second, I just picked up a second keyless remote off of eBay for $13. I followed the programming instructions, but only managed to disable (wiped the codes) my original working remote. I vaguely remember someone else with a 95 having the same problem. Any one know the trick to get a 95 reprogrammed? It's an early model '95 (6/94 build) with OBD1 - could this have something to do with it?

I followed the instructions exactly. Lights blinked just like they should. I even found different instructions in the TSB section from Nissan saying to lock/unlock before hitting the first remote. Either way - nothing. Tried both the manual and power locks. I even tried having either the trunk or hood open as other Nissan's need to have the hatch open to program.

I did find that I had to pull the battery after each failed attempt before I could get the cleared code signal to blink.

I still believe I have OBD1 - from what I read on another site (Maxima FAQs?) the early 95's were OBD1. I do not have the OBDII connector under the steering column. There is no other way that I can tell the difference.

The obd-ll connector is under the dash by the passenger seat. I have a 3/94 (or 8/94 - can't remember) and I am obd-ll. Also, the Haynes manual states that all Maximas from 1995 onwards are obd-ll.

Read post # 41 on the 4th gen FAQ's:
https://maxima.org/forums/4th-generation-maxima-1995-1999/72447-reset-airbag-warning-light-ok-but-car-won-t-crank-2.html

1995 - 1st year 4th gen, some early production models had OBD1. Rear oxygen sensor in cat. Only year GXE could have S&C package and 5 speed transmission. Only year SE could get S&C package without sunroof.

ProjectNeptune: thanks, I was posting my reply at the same time you were... I looked real quick and didn't see an OBDII connector on the pass side. I'll tear into it more to see if it's hidden. I'll be real happy if you all are right - I have a OBDII scanner handy! Now the remote on the other hand..... My wife had it and I had to use the key. She's not too happy that it doesn't work any more

Open the fuse box cover, the plug should be in that area.

There is a plug there, but it is not an OBDII plug. I still haven't had a chance to check on the pass side where projectneptune mentioned. It's not out in the open....

Cool... sounds like one thing out of the way.

It hit 200,000 mi on the way to work this morning!!!!!!!!!!

Now all that is left is the keyless entry and the airbag light (still on after reset). I need to do some investigating there.

Thanks for all your help, if anyone has any other suggestions on the keyless, please let me know.

You're damn right. 95 model in early production has OBD-I. However, there's also an other so called Data Link Connector (DLC), which is fully compatible with OBD-II port, and it is located on the Passenger side close to the end of the ECM.
