My exhaust sounds like RICE!
My exhaust sounds like RICE!
Just a little dissapointed at the high end sound of my exhaust. At idle i love it, u cant really even hear it. at low revs its great cause i can still hear the whistle from the S/C but at high end it just crackle's up and sh*t and gives small backfire at times. I have a 2 week old warpspeed y-pipe, budget resonated b-pipe and dynomax turbo muffler. It was professionally installed, so i doubt there are any air leaks but i'm just disappointed in the sound. My obx sounded great even at high end but this setup kind of embarrasses me. I took a video clip. I'll share wit u guys later on.
I added a 24" glass-packed resonator to my system, and the difference is like night & day. Get the biggest resonator you can fit in there. Also, having a muffler with a slightly smaller core than the tubing will help too, without hurting performance (ex- 2.5" tubing, 2.25" muffler core). I use a "meanstreak" muffler, it has a semi-straight through design (oval) with louvered core elements. Sounds great, no rice at all... almost like a newer GT mustang.

You'll never get a good exhaust sound when using an aftermarket muffler and y-pipe. All aftermarket mufflers are pretty loud and somewhat farty and raspy, especially above 4000rpms. The VQ just doesn't have a pleasant sounding firing order. If it were me, I would have done 2.5" exhaust with a Magnaflow resonator to a 5th gen muffler. Shortly before the muffler I would install a dump pipe for track use.
Hey Dave. A couple of guys have said they opened up their 2k muffler's opening to 2.5". Do you think that will improve the muffler's flow performance?

Having the same OBX setup, I know how nice it sounded. Sorry to hear the new setup is not as nice. At least the car is faster!
...could you still use the OBX muffler? I think RI-max has a GReddy SP1 muffler for sale too. just a thought.

or you can always do an exhaust cut-out that is switchable like hlh did in the end.....then you can run your 2.5" and not bother selling it and buying a 3" and your exhaust will stay relatively quiet, then when you want ultimate power, you can hit the switch and bam the cut-out opens up and then you have a god knows how large exhaust system effectively....that would be for pure power...

That's the thing. I believe the max muffler is not a straight through type. If it were, then I could understand your reasoning. But I think the Nissan ones are a chambered type. So inside there is not 2.25" or 2.5" piping. The flow just enters the muffler though an opening and then goes back and forth until it reaches the twin outlets. So that's why I wonder if opening up the inlet would do anything. I could be wrong though.
Here is a muffler test:

I "think" Nissan mufflers are like this (but with the varible thingie)

Hmm maybe you are right. I dunno.

Nissan muffler: So it does't really look like opening up the inlet would help

my ws ypipe setup also sounded like trash ! i enjoyed the performance side but hated the way the car sounded. im glad those days are over.
it just stinks that these vq's sound nasty , kinda like a fine rear on a woman cutting some nasty farts, just dont add up ! lol

Its all about the stock exhaust manifolds. Ever wonder why 350zs have such nice sounding exhaust? They are RWD, the exhaust manifolds are basically equal. FWD the engine is sideways, so one header will be longer than the other. Thats why cattman headers make everything sound 100x better, cause they are equal length. Its next on MY mod list....

i wish i could spend 700 dollars to get a nice sounding exhaust
. I went custom cause i couldnt afford the greddy.I have warpspeed y-pipe, budget resonated b-pipe (magnaflow resonator) warpspeed straight pipe, dynomax turbo muffler. I'm wondering if i'm getting exhaust leak but who knows...dam i really want headers but i'll have to save a real long time....stupid installation.
btw i have a video, just need someone to host

And its not that bad its just not as good as the obx i had. At idle it sounds amazing, nice and quiet and hummy but at high rpm's, like if u just shift up it gets nasty.
I have a custom 3in exhaust all the way back. With a cherry boom resonator, and apexi N1 box. The apexi box sounded like s-it, so I changed to the HKS N1 type box and it cut the noise by half. Used to be able to hear my car from about two blocks away. Now it more like half a block at high rpm. ( Oh yea, mine is a 99 se turbo

meccanoble- Does "warpspeed straight pipe" mean that you have your cat removed? if so, before you spend money on a new exhaust set up you should try putting the cat back on and see how it sounds. it could make a lot of differience. a friend of mine with a turbo eclips put his cat back on and a lot of the rice sound went a way and he was much happier with it, plus the car smelled really bad without the cat. just a thought. or you should do what dave b says with the gen 5 muffler. his car is really quiet, but then agian he doesnt have boost.
thanks tweeter i guess when i get my y on i'll look in to gettin a thrush instead of stock resonator, i might have to get a custom made b pipe cus i just found out yesterday that i have a huge dent in mine, just my luck
nah this is it, in fact after i dyno tune i'm not spending anymore money on this car. This car has effected me financially, school wise, and just in what i put in to myself. Its taken up a lot of my time and my friends have told me this since day one. Now family is letting me know. I'm content at where its at now even though i want more. The last thing i bought was a tip which should be coming in today. The exhaust isnt horrible just not what i expected. I wanted my car to sound like a subaru STI but its still fine.
If anyone can host the video for me i wo uld be grateful.

How big is the video? I can host about a 7.5MB video if its that small. Email it to me at JMooney5115@yahoo.com

My exhaust sounds like **** now too, after I put my Y-Pipe on. I was at Cattman meet in Tuscon and at least 10 people told me it was cuz of Warpspeeds ****ty flex section. The idle is awesome sounds like a V-8, but once I go above 3K its all rice. Sucks a nut, but I like the extra kick in the pants and my stereo helps with the bees.
mine sounds just fine....there was a period there where my exhaust sounded horrible.....but that was when I had my stock muffler on and my y pipe was brand new and my stock cat was going...now that it sounds great except for this one time that I had an exhaust leak, but that was midas' fault...

gimme gimme gimme
