A/C performance problem

My buddy's 97 GLE blows cold sometimes, cool/warmish other times. The feel to me is much like when the A/C cutout kicks in under hard acceleration.

The odd thing is that the behavior is binary. On the way to lunch today it blew warm (not like the heater, just no compressor running) the entire trip. On the way back from lunch, it blew perfectly cool the entire trip.

He says sometimes when it's blowing warm on his way home he can turn it off and then back on and it will blow cold again but it never switches from malfunction to normal function on its own.

Seems to me to be a relay or the cutout switch (not sure if that's vaccuum driven, electric,...) that's just not right.

Again, full on freon.
Pressure check passed.
New belt (problem existed before and after)
Once it's on, it stays on and works fine, just doesn't always come on (clutch not engaging)

Thoughts?
Know the location of the cutoff/cutout or other relay switches that might be in play here? Is the cutoff based on input from the TPS, RPM, vaccuum?

He has the auto climate control for a head unit if that makes any difference.

Thanks,

J

I had a problem like yours and it turned out to be the triple pressure switch, I may be wrong on the name. This was after extensive work on my A/C, and I said "NOT AGAIN". It is the one that sits on the silver can type thing behind the radiator and under and in front of the battery. I knew many thing were installed new and I gave this easy to get to thing a shot and it was it, I would move the plug and it would turn on and then off (Thank you Nissan Factory Manual bought from Ebay!!). I would tap it when it did not work and it would turn on. I finally became frustrated and hit kind of hard with a screwdriver and all has been well for a couple of months .

No problem .

If that does not work get it checked out by a qualified A/C person. If it turns out that the switch/sensor is totally bad it will cost around $65 to replace it, plus the price of discharging and then recharging of the system.
