Got Y-pipe installed, sounds like an old pontiac
Had a budget Y-pipe installed today and I'm not really impressed with the new exhaust tone. Sounds a little bit tinny at low rpms, kind of like an old Bonneville, or other gm crap, Z34 etc (I'm exaggerating a bit). From what I've read alot of org.er's choose to keep the stock muffler with a Y, Is this because a high flow muffler only makes it sound worse?
Right now I'm debating whether to have a universal magnaflow installed
Any insight is appreciated.
Could anyone post a sound clip of a Y-pipe with aftermarket muffler?

aftermarket y-pipe and a stock muffler sounds high pitched and bad imo. My powertech with ypipe sounds awesome...deep burble at idle (slightly wrxish) and a very deep sound continuing through the rpms up until 5k where it gets SLIGHTLY higher pitched..nothing bees in a can tho. Ive gotten compliments on how my car sounds from guys that hate how imports tend to sound.

None of the comments I get are from me asking...they just tell me my exhaust sounds good. Ive heard sound clips of magnaflows on maximas...they never sound good.
Heres my experience with a Y-pipe and multiple exhaust setups...
1) Budget Y - stock B - stock muffler : very stockish sounding with a pontiac like burble on start up.
2) Budget Y - stock B - dynomax dual exhaust: sounded alright. No real "tone" to it, just sounded like woosh.
3) Budget Y - custom B - flowmaster dual exhaust: my favorite setup. VERY burbly at idle, deep, but quiet at WOT (intake always sounds louder) and the typical flowmaster burble at descending RPMs
4) (current) Budget Y - test pipe - custom B - flowmaster dual exhaust: a tad bit higher pitched because of no cat. Can sound ver ricey if revved when ice cold, other than that, just louder and deeper that my previous #3 setup..
Now, my buddy has had a few different ones as well including Warpseed Y and magnaflow muffler. Sounded horrible and he knew it, so he took it off. Sounded VERY raspy above 5K. Now he has my old dynomax...
Word of warning, a Y-pipe and anything just straight through in design will sound raspy and dont let anyone else convince you it doesnt!

HEHE you guys are so right. Y pipes sound bad. I hada straight through muffler and had to remove it. So nasty sounding. My set up is WS Y, carsound cat, and stock cat back. Sounds deeper than stock with a little burble at some rpms....mostly 1,200 rpms, reminds me of a VG30E Maxima.....oh and a lawn mower.
But I can live with it because I have the extra HP. I know 2 ppl that have a Y with a Greddy SP and it sounds sweet.

I never said it sounded bad?!? I think you guys are taking the "pontiac sounding" a little to far. What i mean is at start up it has a nice burble, almost reminiscent (sp?) of a pontiac which doesnt sound bad?! Maybe i was comparing it to the wrong car? But trust me, it doesnt sound bad, you cant even hear it from the cabin with the windows up...
Trust me, get the Y pipe, you need it to move those massive heavy rims you got there

That's a very small muffler and I still have a time hard believing it sounds good with a ypipe and bpipe. Luda do you have any sound clips? I'll be looking for a new muffler soon and need all the help I can get.

I have stock b-pipe...so im not sure how its gonna sound with yours. If i can get a hold of someones camcorder ill get a soundclip for you.
The best sounding setup I have heard (and the one I will have done soon) is an aftermarket Y-pipe, OEM cat, 2.5" non-resonated B-pipe (although I'm sure a resonated one would sound fine) and a 5th Gen muffler.

80-series, otherwise known as the "camaro-style" muffler. One inlet, two outlets...

It would sound good, but my experience with them is their loud, deep, and they drone very badly...

well i'm gonna go ahead and try a 40 series delta flow, with a custom non-resonated 2.5" b-pipe. i'll let everyone know how it sounds!
when I just had a budget y-pipe and the rest stock, only a small burble at idle and a bit louder on hard excel...but deep not tinny. With the b pipe with res and the cold air still not louad if you take it easy, to me on hard excel it winds out much harder and sounds almost like a good running small block chevy with headers, esp past 5 grand. the budget stuff has never sounded tinny to me.
