Throw out bearing maybe??? Strange that it would happen all of a sudden. You should notify the repair shop A.S.A.P to be safe incase something decides to fail. Good luck getting the problem resolved.

does it do it when you have the tranny in neutral and you are parked with the clutch out?

Throw out bearing could be one thing but that whinning noise during acceleration could be two things wheel bearing and/ or differantial bearing in your tranny. all of 95-97 5sp maximas has problems with Differantial bearings its just metter of how much u drive and how much u beat on ur car. there is a good post in Stickies about tranny bearing. so good luck

My experience (YMMV):

If the car is making a noise while parked, it's not likely to be your diffy bearings (they move when the car does)

Does the noise change with the engine speed? Does it happen when the car is rolling?

Get rolling in neutral w/clutch in. If it makes a noise it could be your mainshaft or diffy bearings.

If not, get rolling in gear w/clutch in. If it makes a noise here but not in neutral, it might be your input shaft.

If it never makes the noise when your clutch is in, it's likely to be your T/O bearing.

All things considered, it's hard to diagnose transmission problems over the .org. I'd recommend you find a good tranny mechanic and have they look at/listen to it. This is usually a free service provided by most reputable shops.

Its funny I would find this post now. Just two weeks ago I posted the about the same problem.

I was told this is a common problem with 5 speed maximas and tried very hard to ignore that god aweful ticking sound (which was loudest in first gear).

Anyway, while driving home from work on friday evening I could no longer find 3rd gear! It was though it had vanished! Sometimes I could find 3rd and other times I could not.

So at about 9:30 PM after rush hour, I decided to go push the car and see if it was a fluke or a genuine problem. 2 Minutes after I got on the highway my transmission EXPLODED!!!

Towed the car to a mechanic, and now I am transmission hunting.

I ordered a '99 vlsd infiniti tranny from a junkyard yesterday. I then went to the infiniti forum and one guy said he lost his third gear too. So i am like what the hell.... Is it the same tranny but equipped with a lsd? Someone said yes, but I was hoping it would be more durable.

I have an automatic and I have that same whining noise. It seems to be when I accelerate, that it makes like a whining, Atari racecar sound. I prolly wouldn't of ever known about or heard it, but I had my whole dash apart to install my new headunit and I had no choice but to listen to the great sounds of my car and nature.

I might know what you talking about, Ive recently realize when Im at around 2600 to 2900, right before 3000, I hear a slight whinning sound. Best heard in 3rd gear because the tranny's most quiet then. Try it in 3rd gear and see if thats what your hearing. Doesnt really bother me thou.
