what is the difference between crank and at the wheels?
I'm assuming that at wheel is how much of the horsepower goes to the wheel for acutal driving, and the rest is used for powering certain things?
so when they tell us a car is say 235 HP in a brochure for a new car they mean at the crank and not at the wheels, and when they say WHP or BHP I'm guessing that at the wheels?
So I guess cars are a little weaker that they advertise (cause its not at the wheels)
just always wondered.
There's power loss between the engine and wheels due to the drivetrain. Manual transmission cars suffer less loss than autos due to the autos use of a torque converter. Horsepower at the wheels is the amount of power that's moving your car; horsepower at the crank is the total power being produced by your car if there weren't any drivetrain loss.
WHP is wheel horsepower but I'm not sure if BHP is the same (don't think it is but not certain).
And yes, cars are definitely "weaker" than advertised. I think stock auto 4th gens produce 140-150whp (25% drivetrain loss) while manuals should be putting down closer to 160whp.

SAE Net= Society of Automotive Engineers Net Horsepower. Term used from 1972 to present to describe HP at the flywheel with all accessories and exhaust installed. Often confused with BHP.
WHP, FWHP,RWHP= Wheel Horsepower(Front or rear) Term used to describe the actual amount of horspower that reaches the drive wheels. This is the most acurate measurement of a vehicles power.
BHP will always give you the highest power rating, SAE is the middle ground, and WHP will be the lowest, but most accurate power rating.
Someone should sticky this. Mods?
