Anyone know what the problem could be with my dad's maxima?
My dad just got a 99 maxima gle but it has a problem when you let off of the accelerator. It kind of "bumps" or "hesitates" and its kind of jerky. The gas mileage also seems kind of low. Does anyone know what this could possibly be? Thanks for the help

Since it's a 99 then it's the coil packs (common problem for 99s), just stay away from the dealer ("stealership"). You can buy them and replace them yourself. Check the "How To" thread stickied at the top of the forum and follow the spark plug replacement link to replace them.
You can buy new ones from online Nissan dealers (like 20-25% off) or you can pickup a used set in the Classified section or eBay.

I too am having the same bump when I take my foot off the gas. I'm getting a new knock, plugs, fuelfilter, cleaning my tb, and now i guess coils are added onto the list. Anythign else that I can replace so I don't run into any problems for another couple miles?

I honestly dont know about interchangability between 95-98 coil packs and 99. I do know however that the 99 coil packs were made by a different manufacturer than the earlier ones that obviously had some quality issues.
I think and please correct me if I'm wrong that all the coil packs are the same for all 95-99. But your better off just getting new ones regardless. Its pretty hard to tell when they're going bad at a car in the junk yard.

greg r - we never heard back from you on this - but I'll give you my 2cents - as the first message said, try to turn overdrive off and see if the same things happens. I bet what you are feeling is the torque lockup converter locking/unlocking.

Yes you can use coil packs from 95-98 Maximas. I know that all of your coil packs are not bad so you can just buy a used set and swap the coil packs 1 by 1 and see which one is the "bad" one. When you find the bad one, just throw that one away and keep the rest as spares

i had the same problem with my freakin 99... it was the coil packs.... an easier way is to keep the car running and unplug coils one at a time, if the car runs the same, that coil is bad, if it gets worse, then the coil is most likely fine....(these were directions coming straight from the tech at nissan) i ended up saving a ton of money by ordering the coils from jerry-rome nissan.

Hey guys sorry I didn't answer until now, I am on a trip to new york and I haven't had a chance to get internet access until now. Anyway, the car is back in Indiana so I will check the OD thing when we get back. But me and my dad aren't real big car guys. I mean I love cars but I really dont know all the technical things about the engine and such, I probably wouldnt be able to replace coil packs or anything. Where would I get that done if it is the problem (which is sounds like it probably is)? We bought the car from a carmax dealer, not a nissan dealer, so I'm not sure the carmax place would know how to fix it but I'll ask. If not, can I just take it to any nissan dealer? I'll let you know if it is the OD thing when we get back to Indiana.
BTW out of complete coincidence my grandpa also bought a maxima recently, same color and everything lol. Since I'm staying at my grandparents house we are gonna go drive it tomorrow since I haven't ever driven a 2002 (what he has).
Thanks for the help guys

It's so easy that even a little kid could do it Basically you unplug the connector and take out 2 screws for each coil pack and take out the old one and put in the new one. Do it yourself and you'll yourself later after you see how easy it is
Here are the directions: http://www.vqpower.com/v2/modules.ph...howpage&pid=33 Just follow the beginning steps to remove the coil packs and don't go any further (unless you want to put in new plugs)
6 coils packs (the pic might not work right now - it should work in a few hours hopefully):
