New?JDM Engine Available?

anyone know where i can find a vq engine? considering a swap...current engine isnt sounding that great. know of any jdm versions avail? Thanks

The JDM verions of the engine for our chassis arent any better than the one we get.

if by JDM you mean engines from the Cefiro, then it might interest you to know the VQ30DET is not all that common in them. You're more likely to find one with the VQ20 or VQ25

It sure isnt common...there are no VQ30DET Cefiros.

The DET isnt used in any FWD chassis.

Umm, thats the name of our motor: VQ30DE. Some people are fooling around with VQ30DE-K and VQ35DE's. They are by no means "bolt on".

if u can find a mevi equiped vq30 over seas then that would be a great upgrade, since your mevi would be ecu controlled

hmm where can i get one for $400? car parts.com has many for $600-900. Its not that i want a "hotter" engine i just feel that my current engine might take a dump on me....sounds real rough during start up and is showing its age.
Also, this engine is used in a honda?!?

Anyway, No they dont use VQ's in Honda's. A Honda owner wouldnt know what to do with such a beast.

How many miles do you have on the engine? Find out exactly what is wrong with your car first off, dont just go swapping in a new engine cause it sounds rough. Theres alot of information on this site and others that can help you diagnose and probably fix your problem without having to do an engine swap.

If a swap is what you need, youll need a VQ30DE 95-99 engine. As was said above, you can find them at car-part.com or ebay. PLEASE read the FAQ's at the top of this forum, theres so much information there about our cars.

It would probably be better to try to fix your engine b/4 you try to do swap an engine.

It is possible to swap the VQ30DE-K (00-01)and the VQ35DE(02+) assuming you don't already have a the vq35 (hopefully not). An engine swap is not common at all here since we already have a good engine to start out with unlike most hondas.

The VQ30DET is a rwd engine and would take considerable amounts of frabrication to convert. There may be a JDM VQ engine you could swap with direct injection (VQ25DD OR VQ30DD) and I don't think they have a VQ with NeoVVL and you would be the first person to this that I know and you would have to import the engine. Your best bet is to fix your current problem or if absolutely required you could swap for a newer engine from a junkyard.

Once again, the Infiniti/Nissan VQ30DE is the SAME EXACT motor, except the infiniti has its own unique valve cover, nothing else is different. Yes, they have the same HP/TQ rating. And you might be confused because people were giving sarcastic info since this is a pretty newb question. It could easily be answered in the FAQ's. Trust me when i tell you, if you have a question (simple one) check out the FAQ's. Its there...

regarding the swap

i only mention a swap b/c that is the worse case senario. I have a 95 SE auto w/ 108,000. Seems like everytime i start it, eithier the rods or something clatter so that there is a loud metal to metal contact sound. It disappears after 3 seconds, but it is an issue that has been occuring more and more often after long periods of sitting (e.g. overnight). I had a problem similar to this one before where there was lack of power and clattering, and changed most the camshaft shims on the intakes...which totally fixed the problem.

and yes..i mention swap b/c when a honda motor goes sour its much cheaper to throw in a b20 or somethin from jpn. :-)

The valve train will make some noise until oil gets to it. Maybe that's what you're hearing.

Engine swaps for nissans are not nearly as big as they are for hondas. 240sx is about the only car I can think of that swaps are really common for the SR20. Most nissan cars (esp Maxima ) already have a good engine without going to Japan to get some engine that would cost and arm and a leg to ship over. Quite a few hondas need special some new JDM engine to be fast. For maximas it is much easier to get another one here if there is a serious engine problem especially since there is such high supply of VQ30s and such low demand.

But I would personally get a professional opinion or something with more proof than funny noises, especially if you engine starts and runs, before I go get the engine lift.

i understand that, but this "noise" just started this week. Only occurs after it has sat for many hours, and frankly sounds like metal on metal contact...quite loud and unresting. Sure does sound like the common timing chain guide wear problem that a lot Vq motors have with 100k on the clock!

Neither, the timing chain guide takes a few seconds to fill up with oil pressure to do its job. This is from a poor design/age or both. Replacing the guide($50 part) gets rid of 95% of the noise in most cases.
Some suggest not to replace the guide until the noise occurs when the engine is hot. If your car is making this noise only when the car is cold, I wouldn't bother.

hmm i've never heard of that...VERY interesting......i do hear a large portion of the noise coming from the side where the cam gears/chains are. have u had this problem B4 or do u just know this is a common defect?

I once had a clunky start up, nissan tech told me it was a non-nissan oil filter causing the problem, a nissan oil filter has ....(forgive me I can't remember the terms), but is something in the filer that kept oil in the heads or something like that......on a non-nissan filter all the oil drains to the oil pan...when you start up after long periods of time your starting a dry engine...correct me if I'm wrong..I know Fram and a few other filters works like the Nissan filters...I think
