Auto Tranny doesn't shift out of First

I just bought a '95 Maxima GLE with an auto transmission. The problem that I am encountering is that when accelerating from a stop or slow coast the transmission will not shift out of first gear. If I let off of the gas slightly or completely for 1 or 2 seconds it will shift out but doesn't seem to ever shift automatically.

I also wonder why it does not have a rear spoiler. I am almost positive that it is a GLE model, it has a tan leather interior, BOSE Stereo, the same rims as my other GLE, and does not have the white gauges that are commonplace on an SE model.

One more thing for now, the display on the BOSE Deck does not work. Can I buy a replacement LCD? The speakers work great. They don't seem to have much wear at all (this might have something to do with the Country Music CDs that I found in the console when I bought it). The LCD problem is something I have encountered with 5/6 of the Nissans that I have owned... is there a quick fix or is the best option to buy an identical deck from a scrapyard or something like that?

Thanks a lot for any help and I will try to contribute to the community with my varied Nissan know-how.

my tranny's like that too.. I'm in the process of looking for a 5th gen tranny. The GLE is the 'luxury' model.. therefore those luxury snobs like us dont really need sporty white gauges and a spoiler.. therefore they dont have them. the stereo, check the faqs n how to's. I believe there is a fix.

You sure about that? I have another '95 GLE, and it has the spoiler. It makes a big difference in the appearance. However... I do like this "Black Emerald" color much more than the plain-'ol black of my other GLE.

You don't think there's anything to be done to fix the tranny problem? That sucks. I was hoping it was a known issue with some sort of fix. My other '95 doesn't have any shifting problems.

TPS maybe? I had the same problem when I was tweaking the TPS. Once I forgot to reconnect the BROWN connector and the car wouldn't shift til like 5krpm and then it would jerk like a mother.

Spoiler was a dealer option on GLE/GXE

For the BOSE, read hte How-To's and find the one for the Bose fix.

daves right, it sounds liek the TPS, the haynes manual shows you how to adjust it, you need a voltmeter i believe, and disconnect oen fo the connectors while you adjust it, i checked in the FSM prevoiusly and one of the symptoms is that it will not shift til it hits a few thousand rpms.

If a GLE or GXE has a spoiler, it was either a dealer-installed option or added aftermarket. If you'll notice, those cars have a high-mount stop light in the rear deck, inside the rear glass, in addition to the LED lights in the spoiler; that's how you can tell if it was standard from the factory.

Same with fog lights - not standard on anything but the SE.

OK, but mine won't shift out of First at all unless I let off the gas. It'll go all the way up to redline and stay there until I let off... no shift at all.

What about if you manually shift?

the auto tranny on the 4th gen have a safety which locks the car in 3rd gear, no down or up shift, if the tires spin while driving. in order to reset this u have to shut off the car and restart... but in your case 1st gear shouldnt be locking ..have a mechanic check the solenoids (specifically the shift solenoid) on the valvebody of the transmission.

I remember shopping for my 97 max in 96. Asked if they could put a spoiler on a GLE or GXE since IMO makes a major cosmetic difference. Answere at dealer was "nope". I ended up buying the SE(thank god!) and am very happy that it worked out that way. It was more money for an all optioned up SE to match the GLE option list but worth it in the long run since I still own it and love it after 126,000miles.
I think Nissan finally met consumer demman in later models and had the option on all models with spoilers as an option(I could be wrong on that).

Anyways 95 GLE w/spoiler = spoiler added after purchase(unless dealer was adding to stock cars).

Thanks for all the information and advice. I will have my mechanic take a look at it, hopefully he can find what is wrong and it will be a quick, and inexpensive, fix.

I think I will buy a spoiler for my Max because it does make a huge cosmetic difference... does it actually make a performance upgrade? I occasionally go around corners too fast and the back wheels slip a little, does this change at all? Well, I'm doing it mostly for the look anyway.

Is there a preferred method of purchasing a spoiler? I have a guy who could probably paint and install it for me for pretty cheap... (when our pathfinder was wrecked he painted the hood and fender for $100 and it was a perfect match with the metallic-grey of the rest of the car). Which years of spoilers will match up with my '95 Max?
