03 04 code question Please help!

I just looked for codes in my max that I got a couple of weeks ago. The first time I scanned I got 03 04 (knock sensor) several times. I drove to get some food and when I came back I did it again and got 05 05 (no failure). WTF?
Since I got this car I have had this feeling that it didn't pull hard enough for 190 HP. Sometimes it seems to run better than other times though. Do I need to replace the knock sensor now that I got 05 05? Why did the 03 04 go away?
BTW I use 91 octane and the previous owner always used 91 too. It is a '98 GXE with 78K.
Please help a

I thought that the knock sensor just goes out and that's it. Why would it throw the code and then not? It doesn't work sometimes and not other times does it? Somebody?

There's a HUGE writeup on KS's in the 4th gen faqs (including partially working ones). Have fun reading. I'd say just replace it though. If you get the code and also feel that you're lacking performance, then it's probably bad.

I have read all of the How To's and the FAQs but I didn't see the complete answer for my question. I know how much people hate it when questions are posted that are answered in the FAQs so I did look. I will look again though. Thanks

Yeah, don't worry about it. http://forums.maxima.org/showthread....7&page=2&pp=30, post 42. I'm lazy and don't feel like reading it. Does that answer your question?

I just looked over that FAQ again and I think I understand it better than last time I read it. What threw me off is the code changing to 05 05 (no error). I expected it to register 03 04 consistently.
I thought that I was driving a Jekyll and Hyde car since I got it. I thought it was just real doggy with the A/C on at first but it would run like crap sometimes without the A/C on too. Multiple personalities or something. But the car still gets 25.5 mpg mostly highway. Thats not bad.
Does a replacement KS last the life of the car normally or is this something that goes out over and over?
Thanks

Never really know about how long it will last...should last awhile though. I really didn't notice that big of a mpg difference with a bad KS, also I get like 27mpg (after a new KS), so there's always room for improvement. Like I said, if you can afford the $100, just replace it...you will notice a big performance gain.

i too had back and forth between no code and 03 04, not to mention the "jekle and hyde" performance. so we will see what happens. ill try and remember to keep u posted.

Dude your SIG pic is too damn big. Read the rules. A KS code will go away if you reset it, of course it will just come back after you drive for a while. Just get a new KS and be done with it.

I wonder what it costs to have it installed. I have read several how to's on this and it looks difficult. I can do sound systems but plugs and oil changes is about as far as I normally go on the mechanical side of things. I can see me losing patience on something like this.

It really isn't very hard. Just make sure you can fit your hand in there, or go find somebody who can. The install will be big bucks unless somebody will listen when you explain the easy way to do it. The dealer would charge like $500 because they take off the manifold. These are the two I found useful http://www.skippynet.com/maxima/knocksensor.htm http://www.motorvate.ca/mvp.php/507
