muffler question please read, clueless

Other then an outrageous amount of sound, What are the up's and downs of having no muffler ? I had a warpspeed cat / y and the rear pipe kept hitting my axle. When i had it taken to be remolded the guy at merlins asked me if i wanted some more sound along with the rear pipe fix, for 50 bucks he did a great job remolding my pipe..chopped my magnaflow muff off and left it straight piped... I'm not sure if i can tell which was better for performance wise.. ( I didnt like the magnaflow to begin with though )

Can some of you who know exhausts in and out explain which would be better and why ? Thanks

When i was getting exhuast put on my 95' i took off the muffler and then drove to the shop.It was stock with intake, it sounded sweet, better than now with new pipes and muffer. Did have a test pipe but took it out cuz i wanted more torque.

well, (generally speaking), the easier and faster the exhaust gases leave the car, the better performance. I dont see anything wrong with not having a muffler except noise pollution and angry neighbors....heck there is a camry around her that drives with no b-pipe or muffler(he might have his cat..i dunno)... i have heard that if you decrease your back pressure too much, it will fry your valves...but that never happens...
