Help. Weird Noise Coming From Transmission

Okay Guys Whoever can help me out on this one I will be forever indebted to you. Here is the problem. There is a weird noise coming from the transmission. This only occurs when the car is in gear and you can hear it in every gear, more noticible though when you are in 1st gear (5-Speed). Took it to my mechanic yesterday and he seemed to think it needed gear oil. So I went and bought 4 quarts of it (Mobil 1 Durablend 75W/140). He drained the old out and put the new in. Told me to drive on it cause it would take sometime to get the gears going and smooth them out. Okay. This morning while taking wifey to work the noise has seemed to get louder. So I need help and FAST cause if this is transmission related then I need to get a hold of one since we are down to 1 car for now (A-hole hit my wife 2 weeks ago in our brand new Expedition, $8070 worth of damage, won't get it back for 3 more weeks, so it's mad max for now).

Here is what I think it could be but would highly rely on you guys for help:

1. Clutch (flywheel, throw-out bearing, anything)
2. Transmission (?)
3. ?????????????????

Is it a whining sound? If so look in the faqs for info on the common diffy bearing problem.

Uhh first off Mobil 1 isn't good to be using in our 4th gens as it is GL-5. Second you should be using GL-4 75W/90 not 140 weight thats wayyy too thick when it heats up.

I would drain that out and unfortunately, it sounds like you have the diff bearing problem.

I had the same thing in my 96 SE, and I thought it was the TO bearing, unfortunately after taking it all of, came out to be the main tranny bearing. And like G20FLYER said, use 75/90. I'm picking my tranny up today, it's $350 out the door to get it rebuild.

I take it was a local place that rebuilt your tranny?

Yeah it was a local tranny repair shop. Look around, better off going to a local, rather than going to a bigger chain store shop and paying double. You should get a warranty with both anyway.
