HELP: E-brake is extremely loose after rear pad replacement

Hi All, after replacing my left rear brake pads, my e-brake is now extremely loose. I thought the e-brake was self adjusting? I must have put it up and down about 50-100 times with it parked and driving, and it doesnt do much. Does anyone know how to adjust the cable????

Thanks in advance!

unclip the 2 clips on the boot. there will be a nut there, i think its 10mm. just tighten that and it will be all good.

Did you forget to re-attach the parking brake cable to the caliper(s)?

What boot do you speak of? Are you talking about the e-brake boot in the car???

The bolt that holds the e-brake cable assembly to the caliper has been put back. The e-brake works, but barely...the car still rolls with it engaged, but there is a slight resistance...really sucks.

No, I ended up replacing both sides. This e-brake is bothering me severely since my car is 5-speed...I sorta rely on it a lot.

if everything is attached correctly, then why don't you just pump the E-brakes a few times until the brake fluid pumps throughly.

Thats the thing, I pumped the brakes and pulled on the e-brake like a 100 times, and it is still screwed.

Is there any adjustment bolt by the calipers to tighten the e-brake cable?

just double check everything. check the spring, cables, nut, etc is correctly installed.... and check if you have a good amt level for brake fluid... other than that bro, if you did installed everything correctly ususally it is just the pumping of the ebrakes and the brake fluid =/

since you guys are talking about rear brakes, how do you get the rear brake piston to retract? the front i used a C-clamp but the rear seems different.

For the rear you need to use a cube shaped piston turning tool which goes into a 3/8" ratchet. The one I had had all different sides with different combinations for both domestics and imports

You can also just use a needle-nose plier to retract the piston - a little trickier, but thats what I've always done. If the piston is really really hard to turn/retract, its probably a good time to rebuild/replace that caliper.

I am not sure why you removed any particular bolt on the caliper to disengage the parking brake cable... you should just be able to pull the cable of the hook it is clipped onto. If I am thinking of the same bolt you undid, I think you might have screwed up the entire caliper/parking brake mechanism on that side... did you remove the bolt on which the parking brake cable spring is sitting on? if you did, I'm sure you messed up the caliper (in terms of the parking brake adjustments). I don't know if that can be "readjusted"... I assume it can, but don't know how that whole mechanism works.
