Problem getting into first gear at stop

Manual tranny...

Here's the situation:
- Car stopped at a light
- In neutral
- Light goes green, I press down on the pedal
- Try to put it from neutral into first
- Can't get it into first, feels like gears hitting gears
- Can't force it in

This happens every now and then, but it's getting more frequent.

The only way I can get it into first, is to:
-Rev the engine
-Let the rpm's drop while apply light pressure (to putting it into first gear)
-Eventually it it will catch

Any ideas on what's going on? Think my synchro's are going?

Thanks guys, good ot have the .org back

ps clutch fluid is filled

Yep, that happens and worn trannies, try double clutching before going in first, it should help.

Yeah, I'm getting worried that it might be my tranny just plain getting old.

Double clutching? Guess I'm going back to the days before synchros lol

you know whats weird, i have the same problem. and i just got my tranny rebuilt.
what i do is when it doesn't go in, i pull back to neutral, let go of clutch and do it again, and it usually goes in. i thought it was normal, i know it cant be worn already, rebuilt was done about 3 months ago.

Synchros are shot. My altima did the same thing. Drain your tranny and fill it with Redline MTL. It does wonders. I couldn't put it in 1st gear at a dead stop half the time, now I can get it in while still moving at about 10 mph.

Drain and fill sounds good. I had the same problem and turns out I was low on tranny fluid.

Who carries redline MTL in as far as local stores? Autozone, Pep boys? .... or do i just have to get lucky and stumble over it somewhere?

If you have a VANS auto parts in your area they carry it.

Only specialty shops in my area carry it.

Try here to search for dealer in your area:
http://www.redlineoil.com/dealers.asp

MTL just stands for Manual Transmisson Lubricant... or something to that effect. They do carry different weights, but MTL is the most common for non-race applications.

Try putting it into 2nd, and then 1st. Should be easier to go in first.

You're feeling the 1st gear speed lock out. It's simple to get around this problem:

Clutch in, nuetral, clutch out, clutch in, quick rev, select 1st, clutch out. I can grab 1st at 20mph double clutch like this.

The 1st gear resistance is kind normal for us at a stop. What dave posted works or what works for me is go into second, then shift into first without releasing the clutch.
