This is somewhat brief, but I recommend going and buying a haynes manual, it's very helpful! YOu dont need to compress the spring very far actually, and not until the strut assembly is off of the car. I'll start fromt he beginning: jack up the car, take off the wheel, loosen and remove the 2 nuts and 2 bolts holding the strut assemble to the brake assembly. Pop the hood, and loosen and remove the 3 nuts on top of the shock mount. MAke sure you have the car lowered onto a jack stand, now raise up the opposite side of teh car and the strut which you just loosened should now be able to be removed. Take out the strut/spring assemble and now compress the spring. Leave the spring tightened down and loosen the nut ontop of the strut and take off the plate. now SLOWLY un-compress the spring and should all come apart. DO this all around the car. JUst replace each one before you go onto another strut/shock or else your car will...well fall down obviously.
If you are not sure what to do, have someone who knows what they are doing help you because the spring could kill you if it decides to expand or if you use the compressor incorrectly. I'm not responsible if you follow this and get hurt, so I say get some help from someone locally. But honestly go buy a haynes book and follow what it says, a very very helpful guide if you do any thing like this and are unsure of what to do.
