Transmission should be a 5speed auto, not 4spd auto, and as someone mentioned, it doesnt shift as smooth as you would like it to. Headlights look nice but the 9004 design is lousy. The rear beam suspension sucks. The seats dont have enough lateral supports, expecially for an entry level sports sedan.

I'm pretty sure the difference is that moonroofs are glass and sunroofs are solid metal...

a few more gripes in addition to the previous post ..

- no TCS until '99, and still was an option which should've been standard
- no side airbags until '98, should've been standard and not in an option pkg.

I disagree.
I like the fact that the side airbags are not standard. I don't want them.
I am glad you have to add them if you really want them.
And since most Maximas that you see don't have them, I think most people don't want them.

9004 Headlights, sh!ty malfunctioning side airbags, 4 speed auto, Coil packs, constantly losing my driver side clear corner on the highways, etc.

But the overall reliablity, power, and exterior/interior design keeps me happy.

never heard of malfuntioning airbags, sounds like an isolated incedent, and the clear corners are aftermarket. Cant blame the car. a $.69 tube of super glue solves that problem

I agree with many others on here.

1. Body Roll is nasty, I think I'm going to roll over, I thought we came stock with a rear sway bar?
2. Stock Alarm couldnt work if it wanted to
3. Lack of LSD, they caught on later in the generations
4.Weak 3rd gear.
5. In the engine bay everything is a little too compact, if you want to work on a specific part, you have to take 3 other things off just to get to it( but I wont complain cause I'm now remembering the engine bay of a an STi . . . )

As for the Auto tranny I cant complain cause I have a 5 Speed, but for the sake of my brother who gets robbed of power and has to put up with the hard shifting . . . it could use some improvment.

Even if they are turbo, I would rather have the 6. You just don't have the lag, but I see your point.

Oh I'm not saying I'd want the STi over the Max (well .. ) I was refering to cramped spaced under the hood. you can see the ground at certain places on the max, the a STi light cant make it all the way through.

yea the turbo lag on the STi is bad.

Well, ive had mine for a few months now so i'll chime in.

Suspension: For a "4DSC" it handles like ***. Embarassing body roll, 6 feet of wheel gap.... I addressed this with Maxspeed springs and KYB GR2's, which will work for now....

Engine: I cant believe more people havent complained about the lack of top end power. The VQ falls on its face on the top end. You stomp on it from a low RPM, starts to pull real nice, and then bleh........ Also, 190hp is pretty weak from a 3.0L 6cyl. There are a few naturally aspirated 4 banger hondas that can beat that, including the RSX/TSX, which has a 1/3 less displacement and 10 more hp. Anything under 225hp is kinda an embarassment IMHO. Nothing a MEVI and Y-pipe cant fix though, I suppose.

Tranny: I have an auto. First auto ive ever owned. Coming off a 12 sec DSM and a 5 speed Prelude, the Max is sort of a bore with the auto. And the quality of the auto is kinda iffy. I saw others bashing it when comparing it to Audi's and BMW's (which isnt really fair, those are way pricier cars), but I can say that I wish it shifted a good bit smoother/quicker.

Fit and Finish: I really like the interior layout. Ergonomically everything is pretty sound. I have a GLE with tan leather and sunroof, and its a joy. However, it is lacking on a few little things, like HID's, heated seats/mirrors, adujstable pedal height, auto windshield wipers/headlights. Seems to me that the Max claims to be a sport/luxury sedan, but its a little lacking on both the sport and the luxury, but overall its a fairly good compromise, and an excellent platform to start with and the customize to your tastes.

well i dont like how it pulls to the right most of the cars life.

i dont like how the starter makes that crazed squealing sound sometimes during starting it.

i wish the car was faster stock, it would make performance modding easier, lol !

i didnt like the cheap carbon fiber hood i had but i recently took it off

i like the injen intake and i dont like it (looks good sucks heat)

i dont like that slight ticking sound i hear when i use 5w-30 motor oil, 10w -30 does the trick

i dont like my service engine soon light and its usually on

i dont like my cars lack of top end

i prefer rwd

i dont like how the sarona side skirts catch rocks. bad for weight reduction, i scoop handfuls out before i hit the dragway.

but hey i love this car, those are just some minor things

What I don't like about my Maxima? Hmmm....I don't like that everyone compares it to new Bimmers and Acuras...well, maybe I do since it must mean that my Maxima is in the same class as those cars, or else why would we be comparing them?

why don't you replace your injen with a PR, or even a short ram... that will shift some of your low end to mid or high depending on your choice? i always wondered why you had injen when you were trying to be a NA beast? i like the style of it, but if you think literally like you said... hot air

overall, being my first car... i can't really have my cake and eat it too...

BUT i dont like the harsh shifting of the automatic...

Thats sad that you are comparing a Maxima, to a $40,000 BMW. anyway dude I love my maxima and since this is my first really good car comparing to previous cars. Well if i was a rich person i would still rock my 95 maxima or perhaps a new one.

There is really nothing to complain about on the car. I love the Maxima, I'm selling mine so I can get a 5spd Max. My car has a 157K almost and runs like it is brand new. Gotta love the VQ and Nissan quality.

But if I had to complain about something, it would be the seats. No support, and on long trips get slightly uncomfortable after a while, but nothing unbearable. And the Bose while hits fairly well is still not that great. No highs or lows when you have a Bose!

They went with the solid axle rear in the 4th Generation to save money. Worst quality this car has.

The 3rd Gens had 4 wheel independent suspension but i went through 3 motors in 5 years. All main bearing failures.

Cant win

I agree. My mom's '95 is ridiculously noisy for a '95 "anything," and it is bone stock with the balloon steelies. It's going to require a ton of damping and barrier pad just to make it as quiet as her previous NT DSM. If anyone has had any luck quieting the road noise, I'd like to hear what you did.

On the positive side, this thing gets amazing mileage, has a decent stock stereo, and has good power for a grocery-getter. A nice car with the exception of the road (and engine) noise.

Erty, that is one of the coolest sigs around, man.
I mean, that is totally awesome how you show stock, and then modified. Keep it up.

HID's were not even being put standard on most cars until like 02 or so. I mean, BMW used them on upper models and Mercedes did on upper models, so you cannot say that you thinkt he Maxima is "not luxury enough." Also, back when the 4th gens came out, not everything being made (even 4 bangers) had over 200hp. ha ha

If you noticed, there alot of 99s that have a problem with the Airbag light going off, which usually relates to the side airbags shorting out. I checked the previous service records, and there was a side airbag on my car replaced @ 35k miles. now the light is going off again.

And the clear corner thing is just the overal design, the driver side socket is too loose, ive seen alot of maximas losing their driver side peice or had them stolen, there should have been atleast one screw to hold them in place that you could unscrew from behind the bumper or something.

The Bose stereo / CD / Cassette headunit. The seats are uncomfortable. The road noise. The hard shift between 1st & 2nd.

OK, here's the few things I don't like about my '96 GXE.

1.The automatic jumps into second when it's cold, but otherwise it's decently smooth for the age and cost of these cars.

2.The front seats are too flat, even in the SE, so you have to brace yourself going around corners. If you've never had a seat with good side support, you don't realize what you're missing.

3.The doorpanels squeak when you lean on the armrests.

4.I'm 6'3" tall, and the front seats don't go back quite far enough. And when I get them back as far as they'll go, the steering wheel is a bit too far away, and there's no in-and-out adjustment.

5. I had to buy a non-sunroof car as my head hits the roof on sunroof Maximas.

I am 6' 3 1/2" and if I put my seat all the way back, I cannot reach the pedals enough to put the clutch all the way in.

You must sit just straight up, because I have a moonroof and I have plenty of room.....even if I spike my hair. Lean back a little....relax... ha ha

I'm 6' 6" and I partially agree, the seats all the way back, cant fully push in pedals, and just feels uncomfortable. but a decent combo of the seat back and leaned make it very comfortable, but us tall people are just doomed.

Look back to when our 4th gen's were brand new. The H.I.D. thing has been addressed already...but n/a four bangers these days get more power, not the 4's of our vq's time. Time goes by, and new technology is used. Car makers will not be satisfied with their car's output even a year after production. Good example: 300zx (n/a), the infamous nissan sports car can be beat by a 4th gen (5 spd.) maxima.
Short 5th gear? I heard 5th gear maxes at like 152 mph - not too shabby. IMO, we have one of the best feeling 5th gears I've driven. It provides power where other cars have to downshift to get by.

Oh yeah, most car's power falls off with 1000-2000 rpm's to spare til redline. Picking on the vq only for that is kind of unfair. Be thankful that we have the torque we do.
